What Are Adverbs?

Words that modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.

Habla rápidamente. (He speaks quickly.) - modifies verb Es muy inteligente. (He's very intelligent.) - modifies adjective Habla muy rápidamente. (He speaks very quickly.) - modifies adverb

Forming Adverbs: -mente

Adjective (feminine) + -mente:

rápido → rápida → rápidamente (quickly) lento → lenta → lentamente (slowly) fácil → fácilmente (easily) feliz → felizmente (happily)

If adjective has same form for both genders: fácil → fácilmente difícil → difícilmente

Adverbs of Manner

How something is done:

bien (well) mal (badly) rápidamente (quickly) lentamente (slowly) fácilmente (easily) difícilmente (with difficulty) cuidadosamente (carefully) claramente (clearly)

Habla bien español. (He speaks Spanish well.) Condujo cuidadosamente. (He drove carefully.)

Adverbs of Time

When something happens:

hoy (today) ayer (yesterday) mañana (tomorrow) ahora (now) luego (later/then) después (after) antes (before) siempre (always) nunca (never) ya (already/now) todavía (still/yet) aún (still/even) pronto (soon) tarde (late) temprano (early)

Llego mañana. (I arrive tomorrow.) Ya terminé. (I already finished.)

Adverbs of Place

Where something happens:

aquí (here) acá (here - less specific) ahí (there - near you) allí (there) allá (there - farther) arriba (up/upstairs) abajo (down/downstairs) delante (in front) detrás (behind) dentro (inside) fuera (outside) cerca (near) lejos (far)

Vivo aquí. (I live here.) Está arriba. (It's upstairs.)

Adverbs of Frequency

How often:

siempre (always) frecuentemente (frequently) a menudo (often) muchas veces (many times) a veces (sometimes) de vez en cuando (from time to time) raramente (rarely) casi nunca (almost never) nunca (never) jamás (never/ever)

Siempre llego temprano. (I always arrive early.) A veces como pizza. (Sometimes I eat pizza.)

Adverbs of Degree/Quantity

How much:

muy (very) mucho (a lot/much) poco (little) bastante (quite/enough) demasiado (too much) tan (so) tanto (so much) casi (almost) apenas (barely) totalmente (totally) completamente (completely)

Es muy alto. (He's very tall.) Habla demasiado. (He talks too much.)

Muy vs Mucho

Muy (very - before adjectives/adverbs): Es muy inteligente. (He's very intelligent.) Habla muy rápido. (He speaks very quickly.)

Mucho (a lot - after verbs): Trabaja mucho. (He works a lot.) Me gusta mucho. (I like it a lot.)

Mucho (very - before más/menos): Es mucho más alto. (He's much taller.) Tengo mucho menos tiempo. (I have much less time.)

Position of Adverbs

Usually after the verb: Habla bien. (He speaks well.) Corre rápidamente. (He runs quickly.)

Can be at beginning for emphasis: Lentamente, se acercó. (Slowly, he approached.)

With compound tenses (between auxiliary and participle): Ha trabajado mucho. (He has worked a lot.) Nunca he estado allí. (I have never been there.)

Multiple -mente Adverbs

Only add -mente to the last one: Habla clara y lentamente. (He speaks clearly and slowly.) [Not: claramente y lentamente]

Adverbs That Don't End in -mente

bien (well) mal (badly) despacio (slowly) deprisa (quickly) pronto (soon) tarde (late) temprano (early) siempre (always) nunca (never)

Comparative Adverbs

más + adverb + que: Habla más rápidamente que tú. (He speaks more quickly than you.)

menos + adverb + que: Corre menos rápido que yo. (He runs less fast than me.)

tan + adverb + como: Habla tan bien como tú. (He speaks as well as you.)

Superlative Adverbs

lo más/menos + adverb + posible: Hazlo lo más rápido posible. (Do it as quickly as possible.)

Irregular Comparatives

bien → mejor (well → better) Canta mejor que yo. (She sings better than me.)

mal → peor (badly → worse) Cocina peor que tú. (He cooks worse than you.)

mucho → más (a lot → more) Trabaja más que antes. (He works more than before.)

poco → menos (little → less) Duerme menos que yo. (He sleeps less than me.)

Adverbial Phrases

de repente (suddenly) a menudo (often) de vez en cuando (from time to time) poco a poco (little by little) de prisa (in a hurry) a tiempo (on time) a la vez (at the same time) en seguida (right away)

Llegó de repente. (He arrived suddenly.)

Intensifiers

sumamente (extremely) extremadamente (extremely) increíblemente (incredibly) terriblemente (terribly) absolutamente (absolutely)

Es sumamente difícil. (It's extremely difficult.)

Affirmation and Negation

sí (yes) también (also/too) claro (of course) por supuesto (of course)

no (no) tampoco (neither/not either) nunca (never) jamás (never)

Yo también voy. (I'm going too.) Yo tampoco voy. (I'm not going either.)

Common Errors

Already vs Still vs Yet

ya (already - affirmative) Ya terminé. (I already finished.)

todavía/aún (still) Todavía está aquí. (He's still here.)

todavía no/aún no (not yet) Todavía no llega. (He hasn't arrived yet.)
