Conditional Tense: Comprehensive Guide

Complete guide to the Spanish conditional tense for expressing "would," polite requests, and hypothetical situations.

Formation

Add endings to the infinitive (same stems as future tense):

All verbs use the same endings:

• yo -ía
• tú -ías
• él/ella/usted -ía
• nosotros/as -íamos
• vosotros/as -íais
• ellos/ellas/ustedes -ían

Regular Examples

hablar (to speak):

• hablaría (I would speak)
• hablarías (you would speak)
• hablaría (he/she/you-formal would speak)
• hablaríamos (we would speak)
• hablaríais (you all would speak - Spain)
• hablarían (they/you all would speak)

comer (to eat): comería, comerías, comería, comeríamos, comeríais, comerían

vivir (to live): viviría, vivirías, viviría, viviríamos, viviríais, vivirían

Irregular Stems

Same irregular stems as future tense:

Drop vowel: haber → habr- → habría, habrías, habría... poder → podr- → podría, podrías, podría... saber → sabr- → sabría, sabrías, sabría... querer → querr- → querría, querrías, querría...

Change to 'd': poner → pondr- → pondría, pondrías, pondría... tener → tendr- → tendría, tendrías, tendría... venir → vendr- → vendría, vendrías, vendría... salir → saldr- → saldría, saldrías, saldría...

Completely irregular: hacer → har- → haría, harías, haría... decir → dir- → diría, dirías, diría...

Uses

Polite requests (softening): ¿Podrías ayudarme? (Could you help me?) Me gustaría un café. (I would like a coffee.) ¿Tendría un momento? (Would you have a moment?)

Hypothetical situations: Yo nunca haría eso. (I would never do that.) ¿Qué harías tú? (What would you do?) Con más dinero, viajaría más. (With more money, I would travel more.)

Conditional sentences (if clauses): Si tuviera tiempo, iría. (If I had time, I would go.) Si fuera rico, compraría una casa. (If I were rich, I would buy a house.)

Note: Use imperfect subjunctive in the "if" clause, conditional in the result.

Future in the past: Dijo que vendría. (He said he would come.) Pensé que llegarías temprano. (I thought you would arrive early.)

Probability/Speculation (past): ¿Qué hora sería? (I wonder what time it was?) Serían las tres. (It was probably three o'clock.) Tendría unos 20 años. (He/She was probably about 20 years old.)

Expressing Desires Politely

Me gustaría... (I would like...) Preferiría... (I would prefer...) Querría... (I would want...)

Me gustaría ir al cine. (I would like to go to the movies.)

Giving Advice (softened)

Yo en tu lugar, estudiaría más. (If I were you, I would study more.) Deberías descansar. (You should rest.)

Conditional vs Imperfect

Conditional (would - hypothetical): Compraría un coche. (I would buy a car - if I could)

Imperfect (used to/would - habitual past): Compraba el pan todos los días. (I would/used to buy bread every day.)

Negative Conditional

No iría. (I wouldn't go.) Nunca haría eso. (I would never do that.) No lo compraría. (I wouldn't buy it.)

With Object Pronouns

Te llamaría pero no tengo tu número. (I would call you but I don't have your number.) Se lo diría pero no está aquí. (I would tell him/her but he/she isn't here.)
