Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns Combined

Master the complex system of using direct and indirect object pronouns together.

Object Pronouns Review

Direct Object (DO) - receives action directly: me, te, lo/la, nos, os, los/las

Indirect Object (IO) - to/for whom: me, te, le, nos, os, les

When Both Appear Together

Order: Indirect Object BEFORE Direct Object

IO + DO pattern: Me lo dio. (He gave it to me.)

  • me = indirect (to me)
  • lo = direct (it)

The "Se" Rule

When both pronouns are 3rd person, "le/les" becomes "se":

Le lo dio.Se lo dio. (He gave it to him/her/you-formal.)

Les las compré.Se las compré. (I bought them for them/you all.)

Common Patterns

Give (dar): Te lo doy. (I give it to you.) Se lo dimos. (We gave it to him/her/them.)

Show (mostrar): Me lo muestras. (You show it to me.) Se la mostré. (I showed it to him/her.)

Say/Tell (decir): Te lo digo. (I tell it to you.) Se lo dijeron. (They told it to him/her.)

Clarifying "Se"

Since "se" can mean multiple things, add clarification:

Se lo di a Juan. (I gave it to Juan.) Se lo di a ella. (I gave it to her.) Se lo di a ustedes. (I gave it to you all.)

Position with Verbs

Before conjugated verbs: Te lo explico. (I explain it to you.) Se la vendí. (I sold it to him/her.)

Attached to infinitives: Quiero dártelo. (I want to give it to you.) Voy a comprárselo. (I'm going to buy it for him/her.)

Attached to gerunds: Estoy explicándotelo. (I'm explaining it to you.)

Attached to affirmative commands: Dámelo. (Give it to me.) Muéstraselo. (Show it to him/her.)

Before negative commands: No me lo des. (Don't give it to me.) No se lo muestres. (Don't show it to him/her.)

Accent Marks

When attaching pronouns, add accents to maintain stress:

dar → dame (no accent needed) dar → dámelo (accent needed - three syllables from end) explicar → explica explicar → explícaselo (accent needed)

All Combinations Table

With me (to/for me):

  • me lo (it to me - masc)
  • me la (it to me - fem)
  • me los (them to me - masc)
  • me las (them to me - fem)

With te (to/for you):

  • te lo, te la, te los, te las

With le/les → se:

  • se lo, se la, se los, se las

With nos:

  • nos lo, nos la, nos los, nos las

Examples in Context

Giving: ¿El libro? Te lo doy. (The book? I'll give it to you.) ¿Las llaves? Se las di a María. (The keys? I gave them to María.)

Buying: ¿El regalo? Se lo compré. (The gift? I bought it for him/her.) ¿Los zapatos? Me los compraron. (The shoes? They bought them for me.)

Saying: ¿La verdad? Te la digo. (The truth? I'll tell it to you.) ¿El secreto? Se lo conté. (The secret? I told it to him/her.)

Common Mistakes

Le lo dio. → ✓ Se lo dio.Lo me dio. → ✓ Me lo dio. (IO before DO) ❌ Dame lo. → ✓ Dámelo. (attach both)

With Reflexive Pronouns

When reflexive + object pronoun:

Me lavo las manos. (I wash my hands.) Me las lavo. (I wash them.)

Reflexive comes first, then object pronoun.

Practice Sentences

Te lo recomiendo. (I recommend it to you.) Nos la explicaron. (They explained it to us.) Se los enviamos. (We sent them to him/her/them.) ¿Me lo prestas? (Will you lend it to me?) Voy a dártelo. (I'm going to give it to you.)

Practice

'I gave it to him' →
