What Are Frequency Adverbs?

Frequency adverbs tell you HOW OFTEN something happens:

English: I always study Spanish. Spanish: Siempre estudio español.

English: She never eats meat. Spanish: Ella nunca come carne.

SIEMPRE = always, every time

NUNCA (Never - 0%)

Usage

NUNCA = never, not ever

Examples:

Important: In Spanish, double negatives are REQUIRED!

Pattern: No + verb + nunca OR Nunca + verb

Both are correct!

Note: "Nunca jamás" = never ever (stronger emphasis)

A VECES (Sometimes - ~50%)

Usage

A VECES = sometimes, at times

Examples:

GENERALMENTE / NORMALMENTE (Usually - ~80%)

Usage

GENERALMENTE = generally, usually NORMALMENTE = normally, usually

Interchangeable in most contexts!

Examples:

• Generalmente me levanto a las 7 (I usually get up at 7)
• Normalmente como en casa (I normally eat at home)
• Generalmente trabajo de lunes a viernes (I generally work Monday to Friday)
• Normalmente voy al gimnasio tres veces por semana (I normally go to the gym three times a week)

FRECUENTEMENTE / A MENUDO (Frequently/Often - ~70%)

Usage

FRECUENTEMENTE = frequently A MENUDO = often

Examples:

• Voy a menudo al cine (I often go to the movies)
• Viajo frecuentemente por trabajo (I frequently travel for work)
• A menudo pienso en ti (I often think about you)
• Como frecuentemente en restaurantes (I frequently eat at restaurants)

MUCHAS VECES (Many Times/Often - ~70%)

Usage

MUCHAS VECES = many times, often

Examples:

• Muchas veces olvido las llaves (Many times I forget my keys)
• He estado muchas veces en Madrid (I've been to Madrid many times)

1. BEFORE the verb (most common):
