Indirect Object Pronouns in Spanish

Learn how to use indirect object pronouns in Spanish! This lesson covers what they are, when to use them, and where they go in sentences.

What is an Indirect Object?

The indirect object answers "to whom" or "for whom" an action is done.

English Example:

I give the book TO MARÍA. (María is the indirect object)
I buy a gift FOR HIM. (him is the indirect object)

Spanish Example:

Doy el libro A MARÍA. (María is the indirect object)
Le compro un regalo. (le = to him/her - indirect object pronoun)

Te escribo mañana. (I'll write to you tomorrow.)
Le hablo en español. (I speak to him in Spanish.)
Nos explica todo. (He explains everything to us.)
Les compro regalos. (I buy them gifts.)

With Infinitives

Two Options:

Option 1: Attached to the infinitive

Voy a decirte la verdad. (I'm going to tell you the truth.)
Quiero darte un regalo. (I want to give you a gift.)
Necesito hablarle. (I need to speak to him/her.)

Option 2: Before the conjugated verb

Te voy a decir la verdad.
Te quiero dar un regalo.
Le necesito hablar.

Both are correct! Choose whichever sounds better.

With Present Participles (-ando/-iendo)

Two Options:

Option 1: Attached (add accent!)

Estoy diciéndote la verdad. (I'm telling you the truth.)
Está escribiéndome. (He's writing to me.)
Estamos explicándoles. (We're explaining to them.)

Option 2: Before the conjugated verb

Te estoy diciendo la verdad.
Me está escribiendo.
Les estamos explicando.

Note: When attaching, add accent to maintain stress!

With Commands

Affirmative Commands: ATTACH the pronoun

¡Dime la verdad! (Tell me the truth!)
¡Escríbele una carta! (Write him a letter!)
¡Tráenos café! (Bring us coffee!)
¡Explícales la regla! (Explain the rule to them!)

Note: Add accent to maintain original stress!

Negative Commands: Place BEFORE the verb

¡No me digas! (Don't tell me!)
¡No le escribas! (Don't write to him!)
¡No nos traigas eso! (Don't bring us that!)
¡No les expliques! (Don't explain to them!)

Clarifying LE and LES

The Problem

LE and LES can mean multiple things:

  • le = to him / to her / to you (formal)
  • les = to them / to you all

The Solution: A + Noun/Pronoun

Add A + person for clarification:

Le hablo. (I speak to him/her/you - unclear)
Le hablo a él. (I speak to him - clear!)
Le hablo a ella. (I speak to her - clear!)
Le hablo a usted. (I speak to you - clear!)

Les escribo. (I write to them/you all - unclear)
Les escribo a ellos. (I write to them - clear!)
Les escribo a ustedes. (I write to you all - clear!)

Common Clarifications

Le doy el libro a María. (I give the book to María.)
Le compro un regalo a mi madre. (I buy my mother a gift.)
Les explico a los estudiantes. (I explain to the students.)

Important: You MUST keep the pronoun even with the clarification!

Wrong: Doy el libro a María. Right: Le doy el libro a María. ✓

Using Both Pronouns Together

When You Have Both Objects

Sometimes you need BOTH indirect AND direct objects:

Example:

I give THE BOOK (direct) TO HIM (indirect).

Pattern: Indirect + Direct + Verb

Indirect Object Pronouns: me, te, le, nos, les Direct Object Pronouns: lo, la, los, las

Examples with Both

Me lo das. (You give it to me.)
Te la envío. (I send it to you.)
Nos los explica. (He explains them to us.)

Special Rule: LE/LES → SE

When LE or LES comes before LO/LA/LOS/LAS, change LE/LES to SE:

Wrong: Le lo doy. Right: Se lo doy. ✓ (I give it to him/her/you.)

Wrong: Les la envío. Right: Se la envío. ✓ (I send it to them.)

More Examples:

Se lo digo. (I tell it to him/her/you.)
Se la mando. (I send it to him/her/you.)
Se los compro. (I buy them for him/her/you.)
Se las explico. (I explain them to him/her/you.)

Clarification (because SE is ambiguous):

Se lo doy a él. (I give it to him.)
Se lo doy a ella. (I give it to her.)
Se lo doy a usted. (I give it to you.)
Se lo doy a ellos. (I give it to them.)

Cultural Notes

Spanish indirect object pronouns are used much more frequently than their English equivalents. While English often drops "to him" or uses different structures, Spanish nearly always requires the pronoun. This makes Spanish more explicit about who benefits from or receives an action.

Memory Tricks

  • ME/TE/NOS: Same for direct & indirect (easy!)
  • LE = LESS specific: No gender distinction
  • SE-cret change: LE becomes SE before LO
  • To/For clue: If you can say "to" or "for," it's indirect
  • GUSTAR = GIFT: Things are given (indirectly) to you
  • Two in a row: Indirect ALWAYS comes first
