What Are Prepositions?

Prepositions are small words that show relationships between things:

  • Location: The book is on the table
  • Direction: I'm going to school
  • Time: We eat at 7 PM
  • Possession: The book of María

Important: Spanish prepositions don't always translate directly from English!

A - To, At

Main Uses

1. Direction/Destination (to)

Note: a + el = al

2. Time (at)

  • A las 3 (At 3 o'clock)
  • A las 8 de la mañana (At 8 AM)
  • A mediodía (At noon)

3. After certain verbs

  • aprender a nadar (to learn to swim)
  • empezar a trabajar (to start to work/working)
  • ayudar a cocinar (to help to cook)

4. Personal "a" (before people as objects)

  • Veo a María (I see María)
  • Llamo a mi madre (I call my mother)
  • Conozco a Juan (I know Juan)

Main Uses

1. Origin/Source (from)

Note: de + el = del

2. Possession (of, 's)

  • El libro de Juan (Juan's book)
  • La casa de mi madre (my mother's house)

  • Una mesa de madera (a wooden table)
  • Un anillo de oro (a gold ring)
  • Una casa de piedra (a stone house)

4. Content/Type (of)

Exception: a pie (on foot) - uses "a"!

Contractions: Al and Del

Spanish has only two contractions:

a + el = al

  • Voy a + el banco = Voy al banco (I'm going to the bank)

de + el = del

  • El libro del profesor (The professor's book)

Important: Only with "el"! Not with other articles:
