Present Tense Basics for Beginners

The present tense is your foundation for Spanish! Learn how to conjugate regular verbs and master the most important irregular verbs.

What is the Present Tense?

The Spanish present tense (el presente) expresses:

  1. Current actions: "Hablo español" (I speak Spanish)
  2. Habitual actions: "Trabajo todos los días" (I work every day)
  3. General truths: "El sol sale por el este" (The sun rises in the east)
  4. Near future: "Mañana voy al cine" (Tomorrow I'm going to the movies)

Subject Pronouns

Before conjugating, review the subject pronouns:

SpanishPronunciationEnglishWhen to Use
yoyohIFirst person singular
tooyouInformal singular
él/ella/ustedel/EH-yah/oos-TEDhe/she/youThird person singular / Formal you
nosotros/asnoh-SOH-trohs/trahsweFirst person plural

ellos/ellas/ustedesEH-yohs/EH-yahs/oos-TEH-desthey/you allThird person plural / Formal you all

Important: In Spanish, you often DON'T use the subject pronoun because the verb ending tells you who's doing the action!
