Question Formation in Spanish

Learn how to ask questions in Spanish! This lesson covers yes/no questions, question words, and the proper way to form questions with correct punctuation and intonation.

Spanish Question Punctuation

Important: Spanish uses TWO question marks:

• Opening: ¿ (upside down)
• Closing: ? (regular)

¿Cómo estás? (How are you?)
¿Hablas español? (Do you speak Spanish?)

Yes/No Questions

These are questions that can be answered with "sí" or "no."

Method 1: Intonation (Most Common)

Simply raise your voice at the end of a statement:

Note: The word order stays the same! Just add question marks and raise your voice.

Method 2: Inversion (Less Common)

Put the verb before the subject (more formal):

¿Es ella profesora? (Is she a teacher?)
¿Tienes tú un perro? (Do you have a dog?)
¿Habla usted español? (Do you speak Spanish?)

Method 3: Tag Questions

Add "¿verdad?" or "¿no?" at the end:

Hablas español, ¿verdad? (You speak Spanish, right?)
Tienes un perro, ¿no? (You have a dog, don't you?)
Es profesora, ¿verdad? (She's a teacher, isn't she?)

Question Words (Palabras Interrogativas)

Important: ALL question words have an accent mark!

1. ¿QUÉ? (What?)

Asking about things or actions:

¿Qué es esto? (What is this?)
¿Qué haces? (What are you doing?)
¿Qué quieres comer? (What do you want to eat?)
¿Qué día es hoy? (What day is today?)

Asking for definitions:

¿Qué es un gato? (What is a cat?)
¿Qué significa esto? (What does this mean?)

2. ¿QUIÉN? / ¿QUIÉNES? (Who?)

Singular: ¿Quién?

¿Quién es ella? (Who is she?)
¿Quién llama? (Who's calling?)
¿De quién es este libro? (Whose book is this?) - literally "Of whom"

Plural: ¿Quiénes?

¿Quiénes son ellos? (Who are they?)
¿Quiénes vienen? (Who are coming?)

With prepositions:

¿Con quién hablas? (Who are you talking with?)
¿Para quién es el regalo? (Who is the gift for?)
¿A quién llamas? (Who are you calling?)

3. ¿DÓNDE? (Where?)

Location:

¿Dónde está el baño? (Where is the bathroom?)
¿Dónde vives? (Where do you live?)
¿Dónde trabaja ella? (Where does she work?)

¿De dónde? (From where?):

¿De dónde eres? (Where are you from?)
¿De dónde es el vino? (Where is the wine from?)

¿Adónde? (To where? - with motion):

¿Adónde vas? (Where are you going?)
¿Adónde viajan? (Where are they traveling to?)

4. ¿CUÁNDO? (When?)

¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños? (When is your birthday?)
¿Cuándo llegas? (When do you arrive?)
¿Cuándo empieza la clase? (When does class start?)
¿Desde cuándo vives aquí? (Since when do you live here?)

5. ¿POR QUÉ? (Why?)

Important: Two separate words!

¿Por qué estudias español? (Why are you studying Spanish?)
¿Por qué no vienes? (Why aren't you coming?)
¿Por qué estás triste? (Why are you sad?)

Answer with PORQUE (because - one word!):

Porque me gusta. (Because I like it.)
Porque tengo que trabajar. (Because I have to work.)

6. ¿CÓMO? (How? / What?)

Asking "how":

¿Cómo estás? (How are you?)
¿Cómo se hace? (How is it done?)
¿Cómo llegas al centro? (How do you get downtown?)

Asking someone to repeat:

¿Cómo? (What? / Pardon?)
¿Cómo dices? (What did you say?)

Descriptions:

¿Cómo es tu casa? (What's your house like?)
¿Cómo es ella? (What's she like?)

7. ¿CUÁNTO/A? (How much?) / ¿CUÁNTOS/AS? (How many?)

Must agree in gender and number!

Examples:

¿Cuánto cuesta? (How much does it cost?)
¿Cuánta leche necesitas? (How much milk do you need?)
¿Cuántos hermanos tienes? (How many siblings do you have?)
¿Cuántas horas trabajas? (How many hours do you work?)

8. ¿CUÁL? / ¿CUÁLES? (Which? / What?)

Singular: ¿Cuál?

¿Cuál prefieres? (Which do you prefer?)
¿Cuál es tu nombre? (What is your name?)
¿Cuál te gusta? (Which one do you like?)

Plural: ¿Cuáles?

¿Cuáles quieres? (Which ones do you want?)
¿Cuáles son tus favoritos? (Which are your favorites?)

¿QUÉ? vs. ¿CUÁL?

Both can mean "what" but are used differently:

¿QUÉ? = asks for definition or type

¿Qué es tu nombre? ❌ (WRONG)
¿Qué libro lees? (What book are you reading?) - type of book
¿Qué música te gusta? (What music do you like?) - type of music

¿CUÁL? = asks for selection from known options

¿Cuál es tu nombre? ✓ (What is your name?) - selecting from all names
¿Cuál libro prefieres? ❌ (WRONG - use QUÉ before nouns)
¿Cuál prefieres? (Which do you prefer?) - selecting from options shown

Rule: Use ¿QUÉ? + noun, use ¿CUÁL? alone with verb
