Reflexive Pronoun Placement for Beginners

Master the rules for where to place reflexive pronouns (me, te, se, nos, os) in different types of sentences. Clear rules make this easy!

Quick Review: Reflexive Pronouns

What Are Reflexive Pronouns?

Reflexive pronouns indicate that the subject performs an action on itself:

SubjectReflexive PronounExample
yomeMe lavo. (I wash myself.)
teTe vistes. (You dress yourself.)
él/ella/ustedseSe levanta. (He/She gets up.)
nosotros/asnosNos sentamos. (We sit down.)
vosotros/asosOs despertáis. (You all wake up.)
ellos/ellas/ustedesseSe acuestan. (They go to bed.)

The Golden Rule: Two Placement Options

With reflexive verbs, you have TWO places where the pronoun can go:

Option 1: BEFORE the Conjugated Verb

Option 2: ATTACHED to the Infinitive or Gerund

The choice depends on the verb form!

Placement with Conjugated Verbs

Rule: BEFORE the Conjugated Verb

When the verb is conjugated, the reflexive pronoun goes BEFORE it:

SpanishEnglishPronoun Position
Me lavo las manos.I wash my hands.BEFORE lavo
Te despiertas temprano. You wake up early.BEFORE despiertas
Se ducha por la mañana.He/She showers in the morning.BEFORE ducha
Nos sentamos aquí.We sit here.BEFORE sentamos
Se llaman María.They're called María.BEFORE llaman

Pattern: PRONOUN + CONJUGATED VERB

Placement with Infinitives

Two Options with Infinitives!

When you have a conjugated verb + infinitive, you can choose:

Option A: BEFORE the Conjugated Verb

SpanishEnglish
Me voy a duchar.I'm going to shower.
Te quieres sentar. You want to sit down.
Se necesita levantar.He/She needs to get up.
Nos podemos ir.We can leave.

Option B: ATTACHED to the Infinitive

SpanishEnglish
Voy a ducharme.I'm going to shower.
Quieres sentarte. You want to sit down.
Necesita levantarse.He/She needs to get up.
Podemos irnos.We can leave.

Both options are equally correct!

Note: When attaching, add an accent if needed to maintain stress:

  • sentar + te = sentarTE (no accent needed)
  • levantar + se = levantarSE (no accent needed)

Common Verbs with Infinitives

Verb + InfinitiveBeforeAttached
IR A + infinitiveMe voy a lavarVoy a lavarme
QUERER + infinitiveTe quieres bañarQuieres bañarte
PODER + infinitiveSe puede sentarPuede sentarse
NECESITAR + infinitiveNos necesitamos irNecesitamos irnos
DEBER + infinitiveOs debéis levantarDebéis levantaros

Placement with Gerunds (Present Progressive)

Two Options with ESTAR + Gerund!

Option A: BEFORE ESTAR

SpanishEnglish
Me estoy duchando.I'm showering.
Te estás vistiendo.You're getting dressed.
Se está levantando.He/She is getting up.
Nos estamos sentando.We're sitting down.

Option B: ATTACHED to the Gerund

SpanishEnglish
Estoy duchándome.I'm showering.
Estás vistiéndote.You're getting dressed.
Está levantándose.He/She is getting up.
Estamos sentándonos.We're sitting down.

Both options are equally correct!

Important: When attaching to gerund, ALWAYS add an accent to maintain stress:

  • duchando + me = duchándoME (accent on á)
  • vistiendo + te = vistiéndoTE (accent on é)

Placement with Commands

Affirmative Commands: ATTACH

With affirmative (positive) commands, ATTACH the pronoun to the end:

SpanishEnglishStructure
¡Levántate!Get up!Command + TE
¡Siéntese!Sit down! (formal)Command + SE
¡Lávense las manos!Wash your hands! (plural)Command + SE
¡Acuéstate!Go to bed!Command + TE
¡Vístanse!Get dressed! (plural)Command + SE

Note: Add accent to maintain stress: levanTA + te = levántaTE

Negative Commands: BEFORE

With negative commands, put the pronoun BEFORE:

SpanishEnglishStructure
¡No te levantes!Don't get up!NO + TE + Command
¡No se siente!Don't sit down! (formal)NO + SE + Command
¡No te vayas!Don't leave!NO + TE + Command
¡No se acuesten!Don't go to bed! (plural)NO + SE + Command

Pattern:

  • Affirmative: Command + PRONOUN (attached)
  • Negative: NO + PRONOUN + Command (separate)

Step-by-Step: Choosing Placement

Step 1: Identify the Verb Form

Is it:

  • A conjugated verb alone? → BEFORE only
  • Conjugated verb + infinitive? → BEFORE conjugated OR attached to infinitive
  • ESTAR + gerund? → BEFORE ESTAR OR attached to gerund
  • Affirmative command? → ATTACHED only
  • Negative command? → BEFORE only

Step 2: Apply the Rule

Examples:

  1. Conjugated verb: "Me lavo" (BEFORE only)
  2. With infinitive: "Me voy a lavar" OR "Voy a lavarme" (both OK)
  3. With gerund: "Me estoy lavando" OR "Estoy lavándome" (both OK)
  4. Affirmative command: "¡Lávate!" (ATTACHED only)
  5. Negative command: "¡No te laves!" (BEFORE only)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Putting pronoun after conjugated verb

  • Wrong: "Lavo me las manos"
  • Right: "Me lavo las manos" (pronoun BEFORE conjugated verb)

Mistake 2: Forgetting accent when attaching to gerund

  • Wrong: "Estoy lavandome"
  • Right: "Estoy lavándome" (accent needed!)

Mistake 3: Wrong placement with negative commands

  • Wrong: "¡No levántate!"
  • Right: "¡No te levantes!" (pronoun goes BEFORE in negative commands)

Mistake 4: Attaching to conjugated verb (not allowed!)

  • Wrong: "Lávome las manos"
  • Right: "Me lavo las manos" (must be BEFORE)

Mistake 5: Using wrong pronoun position in progressive

  • Both are correct!
  • "Me estoy duchando" ✓

  • Choose one, but both work!

Pro Tips

💡 Tip 1: Flexibility with Infinitives/Gerunds With infinitives and gerunds, both positions work! Choose what sounds better or feels more natural.

💡 Tip 2: Remember Accents When attaching to gerunds, ALWAYS add an accent to maintain the stress pattern.

💡 Tip 3: Commands Are Different Affirmative commands: attached Negative commands: before This is NOT optional!

💡 Tip 4: Conjugated = Before If the verb is conjugated (without infinitive/gerund), the pronoun MUST go before. No exceptions!

💡 Tip 5: Listening Practice Native speakers use both options for infinitives/gerunds. Listen and notice which they prefer in different regions!

Cultural Notes

📚 Regional Preferences: Some Spanish-speaking regions prefer "Me voy a duchar" while others prefer "Voy a ducharme." Both are correct everywhere!

🗣️ Spoken vs. Written: In fast speech, the pronoun before the conjugated verb (Me voy a...) is often preferred because it's easier to say quickly.

🌍 Universal Rules: The placement rules are the same in all Spanish-speaking countries. Commands and conjugated verbs work the same everywhere!
