Basic Relative Pronoun: Que

Most common (that/which/who): El libro que compré es interesante. (The book that I bought is interesting.) La mujer que vimos ayer es mi profesora. (The woman who we saw yesterday is my teacher.)

Works for people and things: El coche que me gusta es rojo. (The car that I like is red.) Los estudiantes que estudian aprueban. (The students who study pass.)

Quien/Quienes (Who/Whom)

For people only: La persona con quien hablé es mi jefe. (The person with whom I spoke is my boss.) Los amigos a quienes invité llegaron tarde. (The friends whom I invited arrived late.)

After prepositions (a, de, con, para, etc.): La chica de quien te hablé. (The girl I told you about.) El hombre para quien trabajo. (The man for whom I work.)

Without antecedent (whoever): Quien estudia, aprueba. (Whoever studies, passes.) Ayudo a quien lo necesite. (I help whoever needs it.)

El que/La que/Los que/Las que

For emphasis or clarity: El que llegó tarde fue Juan. (The one who arrived late was Juan.) La que compré ayer está rota. (The one I bought yesterday is broken.)

After prepositions (alternative to quien): La persona con la que hablé. (The person with whom I spoke.) Los amigos a los que invité. (The friends whom I invited.)

As subject (the one who/those who): Los que estudian aprueban. (Those who study pass.) El que madruga coge la oruga. (The early bird catches the worm.)

El cual/La cual/Los cuales/Las cuales

Formal alternative (which/who): La casa, la cual tiene jardín, es cara. (The house, which has a garden, is expensive.)

After prepositions (formal): El edificio en el cual trabajo. (The building in which I work.) Las razones por las cuales renuncié. (The reasons for which I resigned.)

To avoid ambiguity: La hermana de mi amigo, la cual vive en Madrid... (My friend's sister, who lives in Madrid...)

Cuyo/Cuya/Cuyos/Cuyas (Whose)

Shows possession: El autor cuyo libro leí es famoso. (The author whose book I read is famous.) La empresa cuyas acciones subieron. (The company whose stocks went up.)

Agrees with thing possessed, not possessor: El hombre cuya casa compramos. (The man whose house we bought.) Los estudiantes cuyos padres asistieron. (The students whose parents attended.)

Formal register: More common in writing than speech.

Donde (Where)

Place relations: La ciudad donde nací es pequeña. (The city where I was born is small.) El restaurante donde comimos está cerrado. (The restaurant where we ate is closed.)

With prepositions: El lugar desde donde te llamé. (The place from where I called you.) La casa hacia donde vamos. (The house toward where we're going.)

Lo que (What/That which)

Refers to ideas or situations: Lo que dijiste es verdad. (What you said is true.) No entiendo lo que quieres. (I don't understand what you want.)

With ser (The thing is...): Lo que me molesta es la mentira. (What bothers me is the lie.)

Defining vs Non-Defining Clauses

Defining (no commas - essential info): Los estudiantes que estudian aprueban. (The students who study pass.) [Only those who study]

Non-defining (commas - extra info): Los estudiantes, que estudian mucho, aprueban. (The students, who study a lot, pass.) [All students study]

After Prepositions

Simple prepositions + que/quien/cual: La persona con quien vivo. (The person with whom I live.) El tema del que hablamos. (The topic we talked about.) La razón por la que vine. (The reason why I came.)

Compound prepositions + artículo + que/cual: La mesa encima de la que está el libro. (The table on top of which is the book.)

Common Patterns

Con quien (with whom): El amigo con quien salí. (The friend with whom I went out.)

Para quien (for whom): La persona para quien trabajo. (The person for whom I work.)

De quien (of/about whom): La chica de quien te hablé. (The girl I told you about.)

A quien (to whom): El profesor a quien pregunté. (The teacher whom I asked.)

Que vs Cual After Prepositions

Short prepositions (a, de, con, en) + que: La casa en que vivo. (The house in which I live.)

Long/compound prepositions + el/la cual: La mesa debajo de la cual está el gato. (The table under which is the cat.)

Advanced Uses

Que with subjunctive: Busco a alguien que hable inglés. (I'm looking for someone who speaks English.) No hay nadie que lo sepa. (There's no one who knows it.)

El hecho de que (the fact that): El hecho de que llueva no importa. (The fact that it's raining doesn't matter.)

Common Errors

❌ La persona que hablé con ✓ La persona con quien hablé (Don't leave preposition at end)

❌ El libro de que portada es roja ✓ El libro cuya portada es roja (Use cuyo for possession)
