What is the Subjunctive?

The subjunctive is a mood (not a tense) used to express:

  • Doubt, uncertainty
  • Wishes, desires
  • Emotions
  • Recommendations
  • Hypothetical situations
  • Subjective opinions

Indicative vs Subjunctive

Indicative (facts, certainty): Sé que viene. (I know he's coming.)

Subjunctive (doubt, wish): Dudo que venga. (I doubt he's coming.)

Present Subjunctive Formation

Regular verbs:

-ar verbs (opposite vowel -e): hablar → hable, hables, hable, hablemos, habléis, hablen

-er/-ir verbs (opposite vowel -a): comer → coma, comas, coma, comamos, comáis, coman vivir → viva, vivas, viva, vivamos, viváis, vivan

Irregular Present Subjunctive

Stem changes: pensar → piense poder → pueda pedir → pida

Completely irregular: ser → sea ir → vaya haber → haya estar → esté dar → dé saber → sepa

Imperfect Subjunctive Formation

Based on preterite third person plural:

-ar verbs: hablaron → hablara, hablaras, hablara, habláramos, hablarais, hablaran

-er/-ir verbs: comieron → comiera, comieras, comiera, comiéramos, comierais, comieran

Alternative forms (-se): hablase, comiese (both forms are correct)

WEIRDO - Main Triggers

W - Wishes/Desires: Quiero que vengas. (I want you to come.) Espero que estés bien. (I hope you're well.)

E - Emotions: Me alegra que estés aquí. (I'm glad you're here.) Temo que sea tarde. (I'm afraid it's late.)

I - Impersonal Expressions: Es necesario que estudies. (It's necessary that you study.) Es importante que sepas esto. (It's important that you know this.)

R - Recommendations: Recomiendo que vayas. (I recommend that you go.) Sugiero que hables con él. (I suggest that you talk to him.)

D - Doubt/Denial: Dudo que venga. (I doubt he'll come.) No creo que sea verdad. (I don't think it's true.)

O - Ojalá: Ojalá que llueva. (I hope it rains.)

Certainty vs Doubt

Certainty (indicative): Creo que viene. (I think he's coming.) Es cierto que trabaja mucho. (It's certain he works a lot.)

Doubt (subjunctive): No creo que venga. (I don't think he's coming.) No es cierto que trabaje mucho. (It's not certain he works a lot.)

After Certain Conjunctions

Always subjunctive: antes de que (before) para que (so that) sin que (without) con tal de que (provided that) a menos que (unless)

Llámame antes de que salgas. (Call me before you leave.)

Sometimes subjunctive: cuando (when - future/uncertain) hasta que (until - future) después de que (after - future)

Cuando llegues, llámame. (When you arrive, call me - future) Cuando llegó, me llamó. (When he arrived, he called me - past, indicative)

In Adjective Clauses

Unknown/nonexistent antecedent (subjunctive): Busco un apartamento que tenga balcón. (I'm looking for an apartment that has a balcony - don't know if it exists)

Known antecedent (indicative): Busco el apartamento que tiene balcón. (I'm looking for the apartment that has a balcony - I know it exists)

With Ojalá

Ojalá que venga. (I hope he comes.) Ojalá tuviera dinero. (I wish I had money.) Ojalá hubiera sabido. (I wish I had known.)

Sequence of Tenses

Present/Future → Present Subjunctive: Quiero que vengas. (I want you to come.)

Past → Imperfect Subjunctive: Quería que vinieras. (I wanted you to come.)

Common Expressions

Espero que... (I hope that...) Dudo que... (I doubt that...) Es posible que... (It's possible that...) No creo que... (I don't think that...) Ojalá... (I hope...) Aunque... (although...)

When NOT to Use Subjunctive

With certainty: Sé que viene. (I know he's coming.) Es verdad que trabaja. (It's true he works.)

Same subject (use infinitive):Quiero que yo vaya.Quiero ir. (I want to go.)

Present Perfect Subjunctive

haber (present subjunctive) + past participle

Espero que hayas comido. (I hope you have eaten.) Dudo que haya llegado. (I doubt he has arrived.)

Pluperfect Subjunctive

haber (imperfect subjunctive) + past participle

Si hubiera sabido... (If I had known...) Ojalá hubiera ido. (I wish I had gone.)
