Advanced Time Expressions

Complex time expressions for discussing duration, frequency, sequences, and temporal relationships.

Duration (Hace vs Desde hace)

Hace + time period (ago): Llegué hace dos horas. (I arrived two hours ago.) Lo vi hace una semana. (I saw him a week ago.)

Hace + time + que + present (for - ongoing): Hace tres años que vivo aquí. (I've lived here for three years.) ¿Cuánto hace que estudias español? (How long have you been studying Spanish?)

Desde hace + time period (for - ongoing): Vivo aquí desde hace tres años. (I've lived here for three years.) Trabajo aquí desde hace seis meses. (I've been working here for six months.)

Llevar + time + gerund

Llevo dos horas esperando. (I've been waiting for two hours.) ¿Cuánto llevas estudiando? (How long have you been studying?) Llevamos tres días sin comer. (We've gone three days without eating.)

Desde (since)

Desde 2020 (since 2020) Desde el lunes (since Monday) Desde que llegaste (since you arrived)

Vivo aquí desde enero. (I've lived here since January.)

Frequency Expressions

a menudo / con frecuencia (often) de vez en cuando (from time to time) cada dos días (every two days) una vez al mes (once a month) dos veces por semana (twice a week) rara vez / pocas veces (rarely) casi nunca (almost never) siempre (always) nunca (never)

Sequence and Order

primero... luego... después... finalmente (first... then... after... finally) antes de (before) después de (after) mientras (while) al mismo tiempo (at the same time) a la vez (simultaneously)

Primero desayuno, luego trabajo. (First I eat breakfast, then I work.)

Proximity in Time

hace poco (recently / a short time ago) hace mucho (a long time ago) recién (just now - Latin America) acabar de + infinitive (to have just) estar por + infinitive (to be about to) estar a punto de (to be about to)

Acabo de llegar. (I just arrived.) Estoy por salir. (I'm about to leave.)

Deadlines and Limits

para + date/time (by - deadline) antes de + date/time (before) hasta + date/time (until) dentro de + time period (within/in)

Lo necesito para el viernes. (I need it by Friday.) Terminaré dentro de una hora. (I'll finish within an hour.) Trabajo hasta las 6. (I work until 6.)

Relative Time

el día anterior (the day before) al día siguiente (the next day) la semana pasada (last week) la semana que viene (next week) dentro de dos días (in two days) hace dos días (two days ago)

Habitual Past

Solía + infinitive (used to) Solía correr todos los días. (I used to run every day.)

De niño, jugaba mucho. (As a child, I used to play a lot.)

Mixed Expressions

Ya (already, now) Todavía / Aún (still, yet) Ya no (no longer) Todavía no / Aún no (not yet)

Ya terminé. (I already finished.) Todavía estoy trabajando. (I'm still working.) Ya no vivo allí. (I no longer live there.) Todavía no he comido. (I haven't eaten yet.)
