Basic Time Words

Important:

• Days are NOT capitalized in Spanish!
• Use EL for "on" + day: el lunes (on Monday)

HACE for "Ago"

Time Ago

Pattern: HACE + time period + QUE + past action

With QUE:

• Hace un año que vivo aquí. (I've been living here for a year.)
• Hace dos días que no como. (I haven't eaten for two days.)

Simple version:

• Llegué hace una hora. (I arrived an hour ago.)
• Comí hace dos horas. (I ate two hours ago.)

DENTRO DE for "In"

Pattern: DENTRO DE + time period

Examples:

• Vuelvo dentro de cinco minutos. (I'll be back in five minutes.)

When to Use What

Choosing the Right Expression

For specific days:

• el lunes (on Monday - one time)
• los lunes (on Mondays - recurring)

For parts of day:

• por la mañana (in the morning - preferred)
• en la mañana (in the morning - also correct)

For "ago":

• hace + time (hace una hora = an hour ago)

For "in" (future):

• dentro de + time (dentro de una hora = in an hour)

For "since/from":

• desde (desde ayer = since yesterday)

For "until":

• hasta (hasta mañana = until tomorrow)

Common Mistakes to Avoid
