Expressing Certainty and Doubt

Language for expressing different levels of confidence, certainty, and doubt.

Absolute Certainty

Estoy seguro/a. (I'm sure.) Estoy completamente seguro/a. (I'm completely sure.) Sin duda. (Without a doubt.) No hay duda. (There's no doubt.) Es cierto. (It's certain.) Es verdad. (It's true.) Por supuesto. (Of course.) Definitivamente. (Definitely.)

Estoy seguro de que vendrá. (I'm sure he'll come.)

Strong Certainty

Estoy casi seguro/a. (I'm almost sure.) Creo firmemente que... (I firmly believe that...) No tengo ninguna duda. (I have no doubt.) Puedo asegurarte que... (I can assure you that...) Te lo aseguro. (I assure you.)

Probability

Probablemente. (Probably.) Es probable. (It's probable.) Es muy probable que... (It's very likely that...) Lo más probable es que... (Most likely...) Seguramente. (Surely/Most likely.)

Probablemente llueva mañana. (It will probably rain tomorrow.)

Possibility

Es posible. (It's possible.) Puede ser. (It could be.) Tal vez. (Maybe/Perhaps.) Quizás. (Maybe/Perhaps.) A lo mejor. (Maybe.) Posiblemente. (Possibly.)

Tal vez venga más tarde. (Maybe he'll come later.) Quizás tengas razón. (Maybe you're right.)

Uncertainty

No estoy seguro/a. (I'm not sure.) No sé. (I don't know.) No tengo idea. (I have no idea.) No tengo la menor idea. (I don't have the slightest idea.) No lo sé con certeza. (I don't know for certain.)

Doubt

Dudo que... (I doubt that...) Lo dudo. (I doubt it.) No creo que... (I don't think that...) Es dudoso. (It's doubtful.) Tengo mis dudas. (I have my doubts.)

Dudo que venga. (I doubt he'll come.)

Expressing Impossibility

Es imposible. (It's impossible.) No puede ser. (It can't be.) No es posible. (It's not possible.) De ninguna manera. (No way.) Imposible. (Impossible.)

Hedging

Creo que... (I think that...) Me parece que... (It seems to me that...) Supongo que... (I suppose that...) Imagino que... (I imagine that...) Diría que... (I would say that...)

Creo que es una buena idea. (I think it's a good idea.)

Qualifying Statements

Hasta donde yo sé... (As far as I know...) Que yo sepa... (As far as I know...) Por lo que sé... (From what I know...) Si no me equivoco... (If I'm not mistaken...) Si mal no recuerdo... (If I remember correctly...)

Hasta donde yo sé, la reunión es mañana. (As far as I know, the meeting is tomorrow.)

Asking About Certainty

¿Estás seguro/a? (Are you sure?) ¿Estás completamente seguro/a? (Are you completely sure?) ¿Estás convencido/a? (Are you convinced?) ¿No tienes dudas? (Don't you have doubts?) ¿Cómo lo sabes? (How do you know?)

Confirming

Sí, estoy seguro/a. (Yes, I'm sure.) Completamente. (Completely.) Absolutamente. (Absolutely.) Sin lugar a dudas. (Without a doubt.) Lo sé con seguridad. (I know for sure.)

Levels of Confidence

100% certain: Estoy seguro/a, Es cierto, Sin duda

Very likely: Probablemente, Es muy probable, Seguramente

Possible: Puede ser, Tal vez, Quizás, A lo mejor

Unlikely: Lo dudo, Es poco probable, No creo

Impossible: Es imposible, No puede ser

With Subjunctive

Certainty triggers indicative: Es cierto que viene. (It's certain he's coming.) [indicative] Estoy seguro de que vendrá. (I'm sure he'll come.) [indicative]

Doubt triggers subjunctive: Dudo que venga. (I doubt he'll come.) [subjunctive] No creo que venga. (I don't think he'll come.) [subjunctive]

Expressing Conviction

Estoy convencido/a de que... (I'm convinced that...) No me cabe duda de que... (I have no doubt that...) Tengo la certeza de que... (I have the certainty that...)

Expressing Reservation

No estoy del todo seguro/a. (I'm not entirely sure.) Tengo ciertas dudas. (I have certain doubts.) No lo tengo muy claro. (I'm not very clear on it.) Me quedan dudas. (I still have doubts.)

Checking Understanding

¿Verdad? (Right?) ¿No? (Right?) ¿Cierto? (Right?) ¿Seguro? (Sure?)

Vienes mañana, ¿verdad? (You're coming tomorrow, right?)

Common Phrases

Sin lugar a dudas. (Without a doubt.) No cabe duda. (There's no doubt.) A ciencia cierta. (For certain.) Con toda seguridad. (With complete certainty.) Ni lo dudes. (Don't even doubt it.)

Softening Statements

Me imagino que... (I imagine that...) Supongo que sí. (I suppose so.) Puede que tengas razón. (You might be right.) No sé si... (I don't know if...)
