Expressing Uncertainty and Hedging
Expressing uncertainty appropriately is crucial for professional communication, academic writing, and everyday conversation. Spanish offers many ways to soften claims and show appropriate caution.
Why hedge? Hedging makes you sound more thoughtful, prevents overcommitment, and shows intellectual honesty about what you know and don't know.
Degrees of Certainty
From most certain to least certain:

Modal Verbs for Uncertainty
Poder (Can/Might/Could)
Puede ser. (It might be. / Maybe.) Puede que tengas razón. (You might be right.) Podría funcionar. (It could work.) Podría haber un problema. (There could be a problem.)
Note: Puede que + subjunctive expresses possibility: Puede que llueva (It might rain).
Deber de (Must, Probably - Supposition)
Debe de estar en casa. (He must be at home / He's probably at home.) Deben de ser las tres. (It must be around 3 o'clock.)
Important: Deber de (with "de") = supposition. Deber (without "de") = obligation.
Conditional Tense for Uncertainty
Use conditional to soften statements:
Sería mejor esperar. (It would be better to wait.) Diría que necesitamos más tiempo. (I would say we need more time.) Me gustaría pensar que es cierto. (I'd like to think it's true.)

Mood Note: Tal vez, quizás, posiblemente, probablemente can take either indicative or subjunctive, with subjunctive showing more doubt.
