Phone and email conversations have their own vocabulary and conventions in Spanish. Answering the phone, leaving a voicemail, or writing a professional email each follow predictable patterns that differ from English.

Phone Calls (Llamadas Telefónicas)

Answering the phone

Greetings vary by country:

Asking for someone

• ¿Está María? — Is María there?
• ¿Podría hablar con el señor López? — Could I speak with Mr. López?
• ¿Se encuentra la doctora Pérez? — Is Dr. Pérez available?
• ¿De parte de quién? — Who's calling? (the receiver asks this)
• Soy Ana, de la empresa XYZ. — This is Ana, from XYZ company.

During the call

• Un momento, por favor. — One moment, please.
• No cuelgue. — Don't hang up. / Hold on.
• Le comunico. / Le paso. — I'll transfer you. / I'll put you through.
• No se escucha bien. — I can't hear you well. / The connection is bad.
• ¿Me puede repetir eso? — Can you repeat that?
• Tiene el número equivocado. — You have the wrong number.

Leaving a message

• ¿Le puedo dejar un mensaje? — Can I leave a message?
• ¿Podría decirle que me llame? — Could you tell him/her to call me?
• Mi número es… — My number is…
• Que me devuelva la llamada, por favor. — Please have them call me back.

Ending a call

• Bueno, te dejo. — Well, I'll let you go.
• Hablamos luego. — We'll talk later.
• Gracias por llamar. — Thanks for calling.
