Use 1: Hypothetical Situations
"Would" for Hypotheticals
Pattern: Si + imperfect subjunctive, conditional
Structure:
Si [imperfect subjunctive], [conditional]
Examples:
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| Si tuviera dinero, compraría un coche. | If I had money, I would buy a car. |
| Si fuera rico, viajaría por el mundo. | If I were rich, I would travel the world. |
| Si pudiera, te ayudaría. | If I could, I would help you. |
| Si estudiara más, aprobaría. | If I studied more, I would pass. |
Important: This describes situations contrary to current reality.
Without Si Clause
The conditional can also stand alone when context is clear:
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| Yo nunca haría eso. | I would never do that. |
| ¿Qué harías tú? | What would you do? |
| Me gustaría ir. | I would like to go. |
| Sería fantástico. | It would be fantastic. |
Use 2: Polite Requests
More Polite Than Present
Using conditional makes requests more courteous:
Less polite (present):
- ¿Puedes ayudarme? (Can you help me?)
More polite (conditional):
- ¿Podrías ayudarme? (Could you help me?)
Common Polite Expressions
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| ¿Podría ayudarme? | Could you help me? |
| ¿Tendría tiempo? | Would you have time? |
| Me gustaría... | I would like... |
| Querría hablar contigo. | I would like to speak with you. |
| ¿Sería posible...? | Would it be possible...? |
| ¿Le importaría...? | Would you mind...? |
Examples:
- ¿Podrías cerrar la ventana? (Could you close the window?)
- Me gustaría un café, por favor. (I would like a coffee, please.)
- ¿Tendría un momento? (Would you have a moment?)
Use 3: Giving Advice (Should)
DEBER in Conditional = "Should"
DEBER + infinitive in conditional = should
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| Deberías estudiar más. | You should study more. |
| Deberíamos salir. | We should leave. |
| No deberías comer tanto. | You shouldn't eat so much. |
| Debería descansar. | He should rest. |
Note: This is softer advice than deber in present (must).
Use 4: Future in the Past
Reporting Future from Past Perspective
When the main verb is in the past and you're talking about a future action from that past perspective, use conditional:
Present perspective (future):
- Dice que vendrá. (He says he will come.)
Past perspective (conditional):
- Dijo que vendría. (He said he would come.)
More examples:
| Past Reporting | Future Reported |
|---|---|
| Prometió que vendría. | He promised he would come. |
| Dijo que llegaría tarde. | He said he would arrive late. |
| Pensaba que sería fácil. | I thought it would be easy. |
| Creía que costaría más. | I believed it would cost more. |
Use 5: Probability in the Past
Wondering About Past Events
Conditional expresses "probably," "must have" about past:
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| Serían las tres. | It was probably three o'clock. / It must have been three. |
| Tendría veinte años. | He was probably twenty. / He must have been twenty. |
| Estaría en casa. | He was probably at home. |
| Costaría mucho. | It probably cost a lot. |
Compare:
- Future (present probability): Será las tres. (It's probably three.)
- Conditional (past probability): Sería las tres. (It was probably three.)
Use 6: Expressing Desire or Preference
GUSTAR in Conditional
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| Me gustaría ir. | I would like to go. |
| Me gustaría que vinieras. | I would like you to come. |
| Nos gustaría saber. | We would like to know. |
| ¿Te gustaría...? | Would you like...? |
Very common structure for polite requests and invitations!
Conditional vs Imperfect Subjunctive
Don't Confuse Them!
Conditional = main clause (indicative mood)
- Yo compraría un coche. (I would buy a car.)
Imperfect subjunctive = dependent clause (subjunctive mood)
- Si tuviera dinero... (If I had money...)
Together in si clauses:
- Si tuviera dinero, compraría un coche.
- (imperfect subj.) (conditional)

Common Mistakes to Avoid
❌ Mistake 1: Forgetting accent on conditional
- Wrong: comeria
- Right: comería
- ALL conditional forms have accent!
❌ Mistake 2: Using conditional in si clause
- Wrong: Si tendría dinero, compraría...
- Right: Si tuviera dinero, compraría...
- Si clause uses imperfect subjunctive!
❌ Mistake 3: Changing infinitive for regular verbs
- Wrong: comería (changing infinitive)
- Right: comería (full infinitive + ending)
- Keep full infinitive!
❌ Mistake 4: Forgetting irregular stems
- Wrong: poneía (doesn't exist)
- Right: pondría (irregular stem pondr-)
- Same irregulars as future!
❌ Mistake 5: Using conditional for habitual past
- Wrong: Cuando era niño, comería helado. (habitual past)
- Right: Cuando era niño, comía helado. (use imperfect!)
- Conditional ≠ habitual past!
