Introduction
In Spanish, all infinitive verbs end in one of three patterns: -ar, -er, or -ir. Each group follows its own set of regular endings in the present tense. Once you learn these patterns, you can conjugate hundreds of verbs.
-AR Verbs (the largest group)
Example: hablar (to speak)
Drop the -ar ending and add:
| Person | Ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| yo | -o | hablo |
| tΓΊ | -as | hablas |
| Γ©l/ella/usted | -a | habla |
| nosotros | -amos | hablamos |
| ellos/ustedes | -an | hablan |
Common -AR Verbs
- hablar β to speak
- trabajar β to work
- estudiar β to study
- caminar β to walk
- cocinar β to cook
-ER Verbs
Example: comer (to eat)
Drop the -er ending and add:
| Person | Ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| yo | -o | como |
| tΓΊ | -es | comes |
| Γ©l/ella/usted | -e | come |
| nosotros | -emos | comemos |
| ellos/ustedes | -en | comen |
Common -ER Verbs
- comer β to eat
- beber β to drink
- leer β to read
- correr β to run
- aprender β to learn
-IR Verbs
Example: vivir (to live)
Drop the -ir ending and add:
| Person | Ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| yo | -o | vivo |
| tΓΊ | -es | vives |
| Γ©l/ella/usted | -e | vive |
| nosotros | -imos | vivimos |
| ellos/ustedes | -en | viven |
Common -IR Verbs
- vivir β to live
- escribir β to write
- abrir β to open
- decidir β to decide
- recibir β to receive
Key Observations
Notice that -er and -ir verbs share almost the same endings. The only difference is the nosotros form:
- -ER β nosemos (comemos)
- -IR β nosimos (vivimos)
Tip: If you can remember the -AR endings (the most common group) and know that -ER/-IR are nearly identical, you already know the vast majority of regular present tense conjugations.
