Numbers, Dates & Telling Time

Numbers 0–30

Pattern: 16–19 are dieci- + the unit. 21–29 are veinti- + the unit, written as one word.

Numbers 30–100

From 30 onward, tens and units are separate words joined by y:

• 31 → treinta y uno
• 45 → cuarenta y cinco
• 99 → noventa y nueve

Use cien when exactly 100, and ciento before another number: ciento dos (102).

Bigger Numbers

• 200 → doscientos
• 500 → quinientos (irregular)
• 700 → setecientos (irregular)
• 900 → novecientos (irregular)
• 1,000 → mil
• 1,000,000 → un millón

Note: Hundreds agree in gender: doscientos libros but doscientas páginas.

Telling Time

Spanish uses ser to tell time:

• Es la una. — It's one o'clock. (singular for 1:00)
• Son las dos. — It's two o'clock.
• Son las tres y media. — It's 3:30.
• Son las cinco y cuarto. — It's 5:15.
• Son las ocho menos diez. — It's 7:50 (ten to eight).

Key time vocabulary

• y media — half past (:30)
• y cuarto — quarter past (:15)
• menos cuarto — quarter to (:45)
• de la mañana — in the morning (AM)
• de la tarde — in the afternoon (PM)
• de la noche — at night

Days and Months

Days of the week (lowercase in Spanish)

lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves, viernes, sábado, domingo

Months

enero, febrero, marzo, abril, mayo, junio, julio, agosto, septiembre, octubre, noviembre, diciembre

Dates

• Hoy es el 15 de marzo. — Today is March 15th.
• Mi cumpleaños es el 3 de julio. — My birthday is July 3rd.

Note: Spanish uses el + number + de + month. Only the first of the month sometimes uses primero: el primero de enero.
