Coordinating Conjunctions

y/e (and) padre y madre (father and mother) Use 'e' before words starting with 'i' or 'hi': madre e hija (mother and daughter)

o/u (or) ¿Té o café? (Tea or coffee?) Use 'u' before words starting with 'o' or 'ho': siete u ocho (seven or eight)

pero (but) Quiero ir, pero no puedo. (I want to go, but I can't.)

sino (but rather - after negative) No es rojo sino azul. (It's not red but rather blue.)

Subordinating Conjunctions - Cause

porque (because) No salí porque llovía. (I didn't go out because it was raining.)

como (since/as - at beginning) Como estaba cansado, me acosté. (Since I was tired, I went to bed.)

ya que / puesto que (since/as) No voy, ya que tengo que trabajar. (I'm not going since I have to work.)

Subordinating Conjunctions - Purpose

para que (so that - requires subjunctive) Te lo explico para que entiendas. (I'll explain it so that you understand.)

a fin de que (in order that) Hablo despacio a fin de que me comprendas. (I speak slowly so you can understand me.)

Subordinating Conjunctions - Condition

si (if) Si llueve, no voy. (If it rains, I won't go.)

a menos que (unless - subjunctive) Iré a menos que llueva. (I'll go unless it rains.)

con tal de que (provided that - subjunctive) Voy con tal de que me invites. (I'll go provided you invite me.)

Subordinating Conjunctions - Concession

aunque (although/even though) Voy aunque llueva. (I'm going even though it's raining.)

a pesar de que (despite/in spite of) Salí a pesar de que hacía frío. (I went out despite it being cold.)

Subordinating Conjunctions - Time

cuando (when) mientras (while) antes de que (before - subjunctive) después de que (after) hasta que (until) tan pronto como (as soon as)

Llámame cuando llegues. (Call me when you arrive.)

Addition Connectors

además (furthermore/besides) también (also) asimismo (likewise) igualmente (equally)

Me gusta leer. Además, escribo mucho. (I like to read. Furthermore, I write a lot.)

Contrast Connectors

sin embargo (however) no obstante (nevertheless) en cambio (on the other hand) por el contrario (on the contrary) mientras que (whereas)

Estudié mucho; sin embargo, no aprobé. (I studied a lot; however, I didn't pass.)

Result/Consequence

por lo tanto (therefore) por consiguiente (consequently) así que (so) entonces (then/so) como resultado (as a result)

Llovió; por lo tanto, nos quedamos en casa. (It rained; therefore, we stayed home.)

Explanation/Clarification

es decir (that is to say) o sea (in other words - informal) en otras palabras (in other words) esto es (that is)

No voy, es decir, tengo otros planes. (I'm not going, that is, I have other plans.)
