IR A + Infinitive (Near Future)

More immediate, planned future:

Vamos a comer. We're going to eat.

Simple Future Tense

More distant, formal, or prediction-based:

Lloverá.It will rain.
Comeremos.We will eat.

Both are correct!

  • IR A = more colloquial, immediate
  • Future tense = more formal, distant future

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Removing the infinitive ending

  • Wrong: "Yo comeé" (removing -er)
  • Right: "Yo comeré" (keep -er, add -é)

Mistake 2: Forgetting accent marks

  • Wrong: "Yo hablare" (no accent)
  • Right: "Yo hablaré" (all forms except nosotros have accents!)

Mistake 3: Using future for immediate plans in conversation

  • Sounds formal: "Iré al cine" (I will go to the movies)
  • More natural: "Voy a ir al cine" (I'm going to go to the movies)
  • Both are correct, but IR A sounds more natural in speech!

Mistake 4: Irregular stem errors

  • Wrong: "Yo poneré"
  • Right: "Yo pondré" (PONER has irregular stem pondr-)

Mistake 5: Using future for present suppositions incorrectly

  • This takes practice! "Serán las tres" = "It's probably 3 o'clock"
  • Not "They will be the three" (common beginner confusion)

💡 Tip 3: Same Irregulars as Conditional The irregular stems are identical to conditional tense:

  • PODER → podré (future), podría (conditional)
  • TENER → tendré (future), tendría (conditional)

💡 Tip 4: IR A Is Often More Natural In conversation, "Voy a estudiar" sounds more natural than "Estudiaré." Both are correct, but IR A is more colloquial!

💡 Tip 5: Accents Are Essential ALL forms have accents EXCEPT nosotros. Don't forget them!

Cultural Notes

📚 Formality: The simple future tense is slightly more formal than IR A + infinitive. Use it in writing, formal speech, or for distant future.

🗣️ Conversational Preference: In everyday conversation, Spanish speakers often prefer IR A + infinitive: "Voy a ir" instead of "Iré."

🌍 Universal Usage: The future tense works the same way in all Spanish-speaking countries. No regional variations in formation!

Suppositions: Using future for present suppositions ("Serán las tres" = "It's probably 3") is unique to Spanish and takes practice!
