Future Tense in Spanish

Learn how to talk about the future in Spanish! This lesson covers two ways to express future actions: the simple future tense and the IR + A + infinitive construction.

Two Ways to Express the Future

1. IR + A + Infinitive (Going to...)

Most common in everyday speech:

Pattern: IR (conjugated) + A + infinitive

Voy a comer. (I'm going to eat.)
Vas a estudiar. (You're going to study.)
Va a llover. (It's going to rain.)
Vamos a viajar. (We're going to travel.)
Van a trabajar. (They're going to work.)

2. Simple Future Tense (Will...)

More formal or for predictions:

Comeré. (I will eat.)
Estudiarás. (You will study.)
Lloverá. (It will rain.)
Viajaremos. (We will travel.)
Trabajarán. (They will work.)

The Pattern

Subject + IR (conjugated) + A + infinitive verb

Yo voy a trabajar. (I'm going to work.)
Tú vas a comer. (You're going to eat.)
Él va a estudiar. (He's going to study.)
Nosotros vamos a viajar. (We're going to travel.)
Ellos van a dormir. (They're going to sleep.)

Examples with Different Verbs

-AR Verbs:

Voy a hablar. (I'm going to speak.)
Vas a bailar. (You're going to dance.)
Va a comprar. (He's going to buy.)

-ER Verbs:

Voy a comer. (I'm going to eat.)
Vas a beber. (You're going to drink.)
Va a leer. (He's going to read.)

-IR Verbs:

Voy a vivir. (I'm going to live.)
Vas a escribir. (You're going to write.)
Va a salir. (He's going to leave.)

Negative Form

Pattern: NO + IR + A + infinitive

No voy a trabajar. (I'm not going to work.)
No vas a comer. (You're not going to eat.)
No va a llover. (It's not going to rain.)
No vamos a salir. (We're not going to go out.)

Question Form

Pattern: ¿IR + subject + A + infinitive?

¿Vas a trabajar mañana? (Are you going to work tomorrow?)
¿Va a llover? (Is it going to rain?)
¿Van a venir? (Are they going to come?)
¿Vamos a comer? (Are we going to eat?)

Simple Future Tense

How to Form It

Great news: Add future endings directly to the infinitive! (Don't remove -ar/-er/-ir)

Regular Future Endings

These endings work for ALL regular verbs:

Examples: HABLAR (to speak)

Yo hablaré español. (I will speak Spanish.)
Tú hablarás con ella. (You will speak with her.)
Él hablará mañana. (He will speak tomorrow.)
Nosotros hablaremos más tarde. (We will speak later.)
Ellos hablarán en la reunión. (They will speak at the meeting.)

Examples: COMER (to eat)

Comeré pizza. (I will eat pizza.)
Comerás a las 2. (You will eat at 2.)
Comeremos juntos. (We will eat together.)

Examples: VIVIR (to live)

Viviré en España. (I will live in Spain.)
Vivirás en una casa grande. (You will live in a big house.)
Viviremos aquí. (We will live here.)

All Conjugations: -AR, -ER, -IR

HABLAR (to speak):

hablaré, hablarás, hablará, hablaremos, hablaréis, hablarán

COMER (to eat):

comeré, comerás, comerá, comeremos, comeréis, comerán

VIVIR (to live):

viviré, vivirás, vivirá, viviremos, viviréis, vivirán

Note: The endings are THE SAME for all three types!

Irregular Future Stems

Some verbs use a different stem but keep the same endings.

TENER (to have):

Tendremos una reunión. (We will have a meeting.)

PODER (can/to be able):

Podré ir. (I will be able to go.)
Podrás venir. (You will be able to come.)
Podremos ayudar. (We will be able to help.)

SABER (to know):

Sabré la respuesta. (I will know the answer.)
Sabrás más tarde. (You will know later.)
Sabremos pronto. (We will know soon.)

When to Use Each Form

IR + A + Infinitive

Use for:

• Immediate future plans: Voy a comer ahora. (I'm going to eat now.)
• Decided plans: Vamos a viajar el próximo mes. (We're going to travel next month.)
• Everyday speech: Most common in conversation
• Near future: What you're about to do

Simple Future

Use for:

• Predictions: Lloverá mañana. (It will rain tomorrow.)
• Promises: Te llamaré. (I will call you.)
• Formal situations: Written Spanish, news
• Distant future: Less immediate plans
• Uncertainty about now: ¿Qué hora será? (What time could it be? / I wonder what time it is.)
