Present Progressive in Spanish

Learn the present progressive tense in Spanish! This lesson covers how to say what you're doing right now using ESTAR + gerund.

What Is the Present Progressive?

English: I am eating, She is studying, We are working

Spanish: Estoy comiendo, Ella está estudiando, Estamos trabajando

Use it for: Actions happening RIGHT NOW at this moment

Formation

Pattern: ESTAR (conjugated) + Gerund

Two parts:

1. ESTAR - conjugated for the subject
2. Gerund - verb ending in -ando/-iendo (never changes)

Estoy comiendo. (I am eating.)

Present Tense

Forming the Gerund

Regular -AR Verbs → -ANDO

Remove -AR, add -ANDO:

Estoy hablando. (I'm speaking.)

Regular -ER/-IR Verbs → -IENDO

Irregular Gerunds

Stem-Changing -IR Verbs

E → I in stem:

Examples

Estoy pidiendo ayuda. (I'm asking for help.)
Está repitiendo la lección. (He's repeating the lesson.)
Están sirviendo la cena. (They're serving dinner.)

O → U in Stem

Examples

Estoy durmiendo. (I'm sleeping.)
Está durmiendo. (He's/She's sleeping.)

-ER/-IR with Vowel Before Ending

-IENDO becomes -YENDO:

Estoy leyendo un libro. (I'm reading a book.)
Está cayendo nieve. (Snow is falling.)
Estamos oyendo música. (We're hearing music.)
Están construyendo una casa. (They're building a house.)

Completely Irregular

Examples

Estoy yendo al trabajo. (I'm going to work.)
Está viniendo ahora. (He's coming now.)

Note: IR is rarely used in progressive; use "Voy a..." instead.

When to Use Present Progressive

1. Actions Happening RIGHT NOW

At this very moment:

Estoy comiendo. (I'm eating - right now.)
Estás hablando por teléfono. (You're talking on the phone - right now.)
Están trabajando. (They're working - right now.)
¿Qué estás haciendo? (What are you doing - right now?)

2. Temporary Situations

Ongoing but temporary:

Estoy viviendo con mis padres. (I'm living with my parents - temporarily.)
Está estudiando español. (She's studying Spanish - this period of her life.)
Estamos trabajando en un proyecto. (We're working on a project - current, temporary.)

3. Emphasis on Current Action

To emphasize the action is in progress:

¡Estoy hablando! (I'm talking! - Don't interrupt)
Estoy intentando dormir. (I'm trying to sleep.)
¿No ves que estoy ocupado? (Don't you see I'm busy?)

When NOT to Use It

1. Habitual Actions

Use simple present for habits:

✗ Estoy comiendo desayuno todos los días.
✓ Como desayuno todos los días. (I eat breakfast every day.)

✗ Estoy yendo al gimnasio tres veces por semana.
✓ Voy al gimnasio tres veces por semana. (I go to the gym three times a week.)

2. Future Actions

Don't use for future:

✗ Estoy yendo mañana.
✓ Voy mañana. (I'm going tomorrow.)
✓ Voy a ir mañana. (I'm going to go tomorrow.)

3. States and Conditions

Not for ser/estar states:

✗ Estoy siendo cansado.
✓ Estoy cansado. (I'm tired.)

✗ Estoy teniendo hambre.
✓ Tengo hambre. (I'm hungry.)

Progressive in Other Tenses

Past Progressive

ESTAR in imperfect + gerund:

Estaba comiendo. (I was eating.)
Estabas estudiando. (You were studying.)
Estaban trabajando. (They were working.)

Future Progressive

ESTAR in future + gerund:

Estaré trabajando. (I will be working.)
Estarás durmiendo. (You will be sleeping.)
Estarán comiendo. (They will be eating.)

More common: IR + A + ESTAR + gerund

Voy a estar trabajando. (I'm going to be working.)

With Object Pronouns

Position of Pronouns

Two options:

1. Before ESTAR:

Lo estoy comiendo. (I'm eating it.)
Te estoy llamando. (I'm calling you.)
Me estás molestando. (You're bothering me.)

2. Attached to gerund:

Estoy comiéndolo. (I'm eating it.)
Estoy llamándote. (I'm calling you.)
Estás molestándome. (You're bothering me.)

Note: Add accent when attaching pronoun to maintain stress!

Both Are Correct

Lo estoy haciendo. = Estoy haciéndolo. (I'm doing it.)
Te estoy esperando. = Estoy esperándote. (I'm waiting for you.)
Nos están ayudando. = Están ayudándonos. (They're helping us.)
