Gerunds and Present Participle in Spanish
Master the gerund! Learn to form -ANDO/-IENDO forms and use them with ESTAR to express ongoing actions like "I'm eating" or "She's talking."
What is a Gerund?
The gerund (or present participle) is the "-ing" form in English.
English: speaking, eating, living Spanish: hablando, comiendo, viviendo
Main use: With ESTAR to show actions in progress!

Irregular Gerunds
Stem-Changing Verbs
E → I change (only -IR verbs):
| Infinitive | Gerund | English |
|---|---|---|
| pedir | pidiendo | asking for |
| decir | diciendo | saying |
| servir | sirviendo | serving |
| sentir | sintiendo | feeling |
| preferir | prefiriendo | preferring |
| seguir | siguiendo | following |
| venir | viniendo | coming |
O → U change (only -IR verbs):
| Infinitive | Gerund | English |
|---|---|---|

Important: Only -IR verbs with stem changes have irregular gerunds!
Spelling Changes
When the stem ends in a vowel, -IENDO becomes -YENDO:

|---|---|---|
| leer | leyendo | reading |
| creer | creyendo | believing |
| caer | cayendo | falling |
| oír | oyendo | hearing |
| traer | trayendo | bringing |
| ir | yendo | going |
Why? Spanish doesn't like three vowels in a row, so I becomes Y!
Completely Irregular
| Infinitive | Gerund | English |
|---|---|---|
| ir | yendo | going |
| poder | pudiendo | being able to |
Present Progressive with ESTAR
Formula
ESTAR (conjugated) + GERUND = Present Progressive
This shows actions happening RIGHT NOW!
| Subject | ESTAR | Gerund | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | estoy | hablando | I am speaking |
| tú | estás | comiendo | you are eating |
| él/ella | está | escribiendo | he/she is writing |
| nosotros | estamos | estudiando | we are studying |
| vosotros | estáis | durmiendo | you are sleeping |
| ellos | están | corriendo | they are running |
Important: The gerund NEVER changes! Only ESTAR conjugates.
When to Use Present Progressive
Right Now / At This Moment
Actions happening at this exact moment:
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| Estoy comiendo. | I'm eating (right now). |
| Está lloviendo. | It's raining (right now). |
| Estamos estudiando. | We're studying (right now). |
| ¿Qué estás haciendo? | What are you doing (right now)? |
Temporary Actions
Actions that are temporary or in progress:
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| Estoy trabajando en un proyecto. | I'm working on a project. |
| Está viviendo en México. | He's living in Mexico (temporarily). |
| Estamos aprendiendo español. | We're learning Spanish. |
When NOT to Use Present Progressive
Habitual Actions
Don't use for routines or habits:
| Wrong | Right | English |
|---|---|---|
| ❌ Estoy trabajando todos los días. | ✓ Trabajo todos los días. | I work every day. |
| ❌ Estoy comiendo desayuno cada mañana. | ✓ Como desayuno cada mañana. | I eat breakfast every morning. |
Use simple present for habits!
General Truths
Don't use for general facts:
| Wrong | Right | English |
|---|---|---|
| ❌ Estoy hablando español. | ✓ Hablo español. | I speak Spanish (in general). |
| ❌ Está siendo doctor. | ✓ Es doctor. | He is a doctor. |
Near Future (Usually)
Spanish rarely uses present progressive for future:
| Spanish (less common) | Spanish (better) | English |
|---|---|---|
| Estoy yendo mañana. | Voy mañana. | I'm going tomorrow. |
| Estoy comiendo después. | Como después. | I'm eating later. |
Note: English uses "-ing" for future more than Spanish!
Position of Object Pronouns
With gerunds, pronouns can go in TWO places:
Option 1: Attached to Gerund
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| Estoy comiéndolo. | I'm eating it. |
| Está leyéndolo. | He's reading it. |
| Estamos haciéndolo. | We're doing it. |
Note: Add accent to maintain stress!
Option 2: Before ESTAR
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| Lo estoy comiendo. | I'm eating it. |
| Lo está leyendo. | He's reading it. |
| Lo estamos haciendo. | We're doing it. |
Both are correct! Choose whichever sounds better to you.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
❌ Mistake 1: Using gerund for habitual actions
- Wrong: "Estoy comiendo desayuno todos los días"
- Right: "Como desayuno todos los días"
- Present progressive = right now, not habits!
❌ Mistake 2: Wrong endings
- Wrong: "habliendo" or "comando"
- Right: "hablando" and "comiendo"
- -AR = -ando, -ER/-IR = -iendo!
❌ Mistake 3: Conjugating the gerund
- Wrong: "Estoy hablamos"
- Right: "Estamos hablando"
- Only ESTAR changes, gerund stays same!
❌ Mistake 4: Forgetting stem changes (-IR verbs)
- Wrong: "dormiendo" for dormir
- Right: "durmiendo" (o→u change)
- Check -IR verb stem changes!
❌ Mistake 5: Using for near future like English
- English: "I'm going tomorrow"
- Spanish: Better to say "Voy mañana" (not "Estoy yendo")
- Spanish uses present tense more for future!

✓ Actions happening right now ✓ Temporary ongoing actions
When NOT to Use
✗ Habitual actions (use present) ✗ General truths (use present) ✗ Near future (usually use present)
Pro Tips
💡 Tip 1: Right Now Only Present progressive = happening NOW Not for habits or routines "Estoy comiendo" (right now, not every day)
💡 Tip 2: Gerund Never Changes Only ESTAR conjugates The gerund stays the same! "Estamos hablando" (not hablamos)
💡 Tip 3: -IR Verb Stem Changes E→I and O→U for -IR verbs only pedir → pidiendo dormir → durmiendo Check these!
💡 Tip 4: Vowel + Vowel = Y When stem ends in vowel: -yendo leer → leyendo oír → oyendo Prevents three vowels!
💡 Tip 5: Less Than English Spanish uses this less than English "Voy mañana" (not "Estoy yendo") Present tense often enough!
Cultural Notes
📚 Usage Frequency: Spanish uses the present progressive less frequently than English. Where English might say "I'm going tomorrow," Spanish typically just says "Voy mañana" (I go tomorrow).
🗣️ Emphasis on Now: When Spanish DOES use the present progressive, it really emphasizes that something is happening RIGHT NOW at this moment. It's more emphatic than in English.
🌍 Regional Variations:
- All regions use ESTAR + gerund the same way
- Some regions use ANDAR + gerund more colloquially
- IR + gerund exists but is less common
💭 Natural Speech: In conversation, "¿Qué estás haciendo?" (What are you doing?) is extremely common when someone calls or arrives unexpectedly.

Remember: The gerund is your "-ing" form in Spanish! Remember that Spanish uses this construction less than English - "Voy mañana" is better than "Estoy yendo mañana." Practice asking "¿Qué estás haciendo?" and you'll master this essential Spanish structure!
