Imperfect Tense Basics for Beginners

Master the imperfect tense to talk about past habits, descriptions, and ongoing actions in the past. It's easier than the preterite with very few irregulars!

What Is the Imperfect Tense?

The imperfect tense describes:

  • Past habits: "I used to play"
  • Ongoing past actions: "I was playing"
  • Descriptions in the past: "It was sunny"
  • Background information: "While I was studying..."
  • Age in the past: "I was 10 years old"

English equivalents: "used to," "was/were -ing," "would" (habitual)

Imperfect vs. Preterite: The Key Difference

Preterite: Completed Actions

  • One-time events: Comí pizza ayer. (I ate pizza yesterday.)
  • Specific completed actions: Fui a la escuela. (I went to school.)

Imperfect: Ongoing/Habitual/Descriptive

  • Habits: Comía pizza todos los días. (I used to eat pizza every day.)
  • Ongoing: Mientras comía... (While I was eating...)
  • Descriptions: Era un día bonito. (It was a beautiful day.)

Think of it this way:

  • Preterite = What happened (completed)
  • Imperfect = What was happening, used to happen, or how things were

How to Form the Imperfect

Regular Verbs: Super Easy!

Unlike other tenses, imperfect has only 2 sets of endings (not 3)!

Imperfect vs. Preterite in the Same Sentence

Often, the imperfect sets the scene (background) and the preterite tells what happened (action):

SpanishEnglish
Yo leía cuando llamaste.I was reading (imperfect) when you called (preterite).
Llovía cuando salimos. It was raining (imperfect) when we left (preterite).
Ella estudiaba cuando llegué.She was studying (imperfect) when I arrived (preterite).
Hacía sol y decidimos ir a la playa. It was sunny (imperfect) and we decided (preterite) to go to the beach.

Pattern: IMPERFECT (background/ongoing) + PRETERITE (what happened)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Using preterite for habits instead of imperfect

  • Wrong: "Jugué fútbol todos los días" (sounds like one specific time)
  • Right: "Jugaba fútbol todos los días" (I used to play soccer every day)

Mistake 2: Forgetting accent marks

  • Wrong: "Yo comia" (all -ER/-IR forms need accents)
  • Right: "Yo comía"

Mistake 3: Using imperfect for completed one-time actions

  • Wrong: "Ayer comía pizza" (sounds ongoing)
  • Right: "Ayer comí pizza" (I ate pizza yesterday - completed)
  • Imperfect: "Comía pizza todos los días" (I used to eat - habit)

Mistake 4: Confusing SER irregular forms

  • Wrong: "Yo sería" (that's conditional!)
  • Right: "Yo era" (I was)

Mistake 5: Using imperfect incorrectly with specific completed times

  • With "ayer" (yesterday), "anoche" (last night): usually preterite
  • With "siempre" (always), "todos los días" (every day): usually imperfect

Pro Tips

💡 Tip 1: Only 3 Irregulars! Unlike preterite, imperfect has only 3 irregular verbs: SER, IR, VER. Everything else is regular!

💡 Tip 2: Habits = Imperfect If you can say "used to" or "would" (habitual) in English, use imperfect in Spanish.

💡 Tip 3: Imperfect Sets the Scene Think of imperfect as the background of a story. Preterite is what happened in that background.

💡 Tip 4: Age Always Imperfect TENER + age is always imperfect when talking about the past: "Tenía 10 años"

💡 Tip 5: Accent Patterns -AR verbs: Only nosotros has accent (-ábamos) -ER/-IR verbs: ALL forms have accents (-ía, -ías, etc.)

Cultural Notes

📚 Storytelling: Spanish speakers use imperfect beautifully in storytelling to set scenes: "Era una noche oscura. Llovía mucho. Yo caminaba solo..."

🗣️ Childhood Memories: When Spanish speakers talk about childhood, they almost exclusively use imperfect: "Cuando era niño, jugaba en el parque..."

🌍 Universal Tense: The imperfect works the same way in all Spanish-speaking countries. No regional variations!
