The Imperfect Tense for Beginners
The imperfect tense (el imperfecto) is one of two main past tenses in Spanish. It's easier to form than the preterite and is used for habits, descriptions, and ongoing actions in the past.
When to Use the Imperfect
1. Past Habits (Used to)
Actions you did regularly or repeatedly in the past
- Cuando era niño, jugaba fútbol todos los días. (When I was a child, I used to play soccer every day.)
- Siempre comíamos juntos los domingos. (We always used to eat together on Sundays.)
2. Descriptions in the Past (Was/Were)
How things, people, or situations were
- La casa era grande y bonita. (The house was big and beautiful.)
- Hacía frío aquella noche. (It was cold that night.)
- Mi abuela era muy amable. (My grandmother was very kind.)
3. Ongoing Actions (Was/Were doing)
Actions that were in progress
- Yo leía cuando llamaste. (I was reading when you called.)
- Ellos hablaban por teléfono. (They were talking on the phone.)
4. Age and Time in the Past
- Tenía 15 años cuando aprendí a conducir. (I was 15 years old when I learned to drive.)
- Eran las tres de la tarde. (It was 3 in the afternoon.)

Pro Tips
💡 Tip 1: Think "Used to" or "Was/Were" If you can translate to English with "used to," "was," or "were," you probably need imperfect!
💡 Tip 2: Easiest Past Tense! Unlike preterite, most verbs are regular in imperfect, and there are only 3 irregular verbs!
💡 Tip 3: Don't Forget Accent Marks All -ER/-IR imperfect forms need accents: comía, vivías, escribíamos.
💡 Tip 4: Imperfect = Background Information Think of imperfect as setting the scene: "It was raining, I was tired, the house was old..."
💡 Tip 5: Habits Need Imperfect If you did something repeatedly or regularly in the past, use imperfect: "I always ate..." → "Siempre comía..."
Cultural Notes
📚 In Storytelling: Spanish speakers use imperfect to describe background details and set scenes in stories. It creates the atmosphere for the main actions (which use preterite).
🗣️ Nostalgia: The imperfect tense has a nostalgic quality. When people talk about "los viejos tiempos" (the old days), they use imperfect extensively.
🌍 Universal in Spanish: Unlike some verb forms, the imperfect is used the same way across all Spanish-speaking countries. The rules never change!
Next Steps
After mastering the imperfect tense:
- ✅ Learn the preterite tense for completed past actions
- ✅ Practice distinguishing between preterite and imperfect
- ✅ Study past progressive (estaba + gerund)
- ✅ Learn present perfect for recent past
- ✅ Practice telling stories using both past tenses
