Basic Question Words

All question words have accents!

Qué (What)

General information: ¿Qué es esto? (What is this?) ¿Qué quieres? (What do you want?) ¿Qué haces? (What are you doing?)

Definition/explanation: ¿Qué es la vida? (What is life?) ¿Qué significa? (What does it mean?)

With noun (What + noun): ¿Qué libro? (What book?) ¿Qué hora es? (What time is it?) ¿Qué día es hoy? (What day is it today?)

Cuál/Cuáles (Which/What)

Selecting from options: ¿Cuál prefieres? (Which do you prefer?) ¿Cuáles quieres? (Which ones do you want?)

Before "ser" asking for specific information: ¿Cuál es tu nombre? (What is your name?) ¿Cuál es tu número? (What is your number?) ¿Cuál es la diferencia? (What is the difference?)

Qué vs Cuál

Use qué + noun: ¿Qué libro lees? (What book are you reading?) ¿Qué color prefieres? (What color do you prefer?)

Use cuál before ser (specific info): ¿Cuál es tu color favorito? (What is your favorite color?) ¿Cuál es la capital? (What is the capital?)

Quién/Quiénes (Who)

Dónde (Where)

Direction (to where): ¿A dónde vas? / ¿Adónde vas? (Where are you going?)

Origin (from where): ¿De dónde eres? (Where are you from?)

Cuándo (When)

Time: ¿Cuándo llegas? (When do you arrive?) ¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños? (When is your birthday?) ¿Desde cuándo? (Since when?) ¿Hasta cuándo? (Until when?)

Cómo (How)

Manner: ¿Cómo estás? (How are you?) ¿Cómo lo hiciste? (How did you do it?) ¿Cómo se dice? (How do you say it?)

Description: ¿Cómo es? (What is he/she/it like?) ¿Cómo es tu casa? (What is your house like?)

Cómo + adjective/adverb: ¿Cómo de grande es? (How big is it?) ¿Cómo de lejos? (How far?)

Por qué vs Porque

¿Por qué? (Why? - question): ¿Por qué estudias español? (Why do you study Spanish?)

Porque (because - answer): Porque me gusta. (Because I like it.)

El porqué (the reason - noun): No entiendo el porqué. (I don't understand the reason.)

Cuánto/a/os/as (How much/many)

Quantity (masculine): ¿Cuánto cuesta? (How much does it cost?) ¿Cuánto tiempo? (How much time?)

Indirect Questions (No Accent)

Direct (with accent): ¿Dónde vives? (Where do you live?)
