Question Words in Depth

Spanish interrogatives (palabras interrogativas) go beyond basic question formation. Understanding subtle differences between similar question words and mastering embedded questions are key to advanced fluency.

Accent Rule: All question words carry written accents to distinguish them from relatives/conjunctions.

Core Question Words

Qué vs Cuál

This is the trickiest distinction for English speakers.

Qué (What - Definition/Explanation)

Use qué for:

1. Definitions: "What is X?"
2. Explanations: "What does X mean?"
3. Before nouns: "What [noun]?"

Examples:

¿Qué es esto? (What is this?) [asking for definition]

¿Qué significa "hola"? (What does "hola" mean?)

¿Qué libro lees? (What book are you reading?) [qué + noun]

¿Qué hora es? (What time is it?) [set expression with noun]

Cuál (Which/What - Selection)

Use cuál for:

1. Choosing from options: "Which one?"
2. Asking for specific information: names, numbers, dates
3. Before "ser" (usually): asking for specific info, not definition

Examples:

¿Cuál prefieres? (Which one do you prefer?) [selection]

¿Cuál es tu nombre? (What is your name?) [specific info, not definition]

¿Cuál es tu número? (What's your number?)

¿Cuál es la fecha? (What's the date?)

¿Cuál es tu favorito? (Which is your favorite?)

Qué vs Cuál Before SER

¿Qué es...? = What is... (definition, nature) ¿Qué es un diccionario? (What is a dictionary?) [definition] ¿Qué es eso? (What is that?) [asking what it is]

¿Cuál es...? = What is... (specific information) ¿Cuál es tu nombre? (What's your name?) [specific info] ¿Cuál es el problema? (What's the problem?) [specific issue]

Before Nouns

Always use QUÉ before nouns, never cuál:

Quién/Quiénes (Who)

Singular vs Plural

Quién = who (singular) ¿Quién es? (Who is it?)

Quiénes = who (plural) ¿Quiénes son? (Who are they?)

With Prepositions

¿De quién es esto? (Whose is this?) [literally: of whom] ¿Con quién vas? (Who are you going with?) ¿Para quién es? (Who is it for?) ¿A quién llamaste? (Who did you call?)

Personal A

With quién as direct object, use personal a:

¿A quién viste? (Who did you see?) ¿A quiénes invitaste? (Who did you invite?)

Cómo (How)

Basic Usage

¿Cómo estás? (How are you?) ¿Cómo se hace? (How is it done?) ¿Cómo llegaste? (How did you arrive?)

Set Expressions

¿Cómo te llamas? (What's your name?) [literally: How do you call yourself?] ¿Cómo se dice... en español? (How do you say... in Spanish?) ¿Cómo? (What? / Pardon? - didn't hear)

With Adjectives/Adverbs

¿Cómo de grande es? (How big is it?) ¿Cómo de lejos? (How far?)

Dónde (Where)

Basic Forms

¿Dónde? = Where? (location) ¿Dónde vives? (Where do you live?)

¿Adónde? = Where to? (destination with motion) ¿Adónde vas? (Where are you going?)

¿De dónde? = From where? ¿De dónde eres? (Where are you from?)

Modern Usage

Adónde is becoming less common; many use just dónde: ¿Dónde vas? (Where are you going?) [increasingly common]

Cuándo (When)

¿Cuándo llegas? (When are you arriving?) ¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños? (When is your birthday?) ¿Desde cuándo? (Since when?) ¿Hasta cuándo? (Until when?)

Para Cuándo (By When)

¿Para cuándo lo necesitas? (By when do you need it?)

Por Qué vs Porque vs Porqué vs Por Que

¿Por qué? (Why?)

Question: two words, accent

¿Por qué no vienes? (Why aren't you coming?)

Porque (Because)

Answer: one word, no accent

Porque estoy ocupado. (Because I'm busy.)

Porqué (Reason - Noun)

Noun meaning "reason": one word, accent

No entiendo el porqué. (I don't understand the reason.)

Quiero saber el porqué de tu decisión. (I want to know the reason for your decision.)

Por que (By which/For which)

Rare: preposition + relative

La razón por que lo hice... (The reason for which I did it...)

Cuánto/a/os/as (How Much/Many)

Agreement

Must agree with noun in gender and number:

Singular: ¿Cuánto dinero? (How much money?) [masculine] ¿Cuánta agua? (How much water?) [feminine]

Plural: ¿Cuántos libros? (How many books?) [masculine] ¿Cuántas personas? (How many people?) [feminine]

Without Noun

¿Cuánto cuesta? (How much does it cost?) ¿Cuántos hay? (How many are there?)

Time

¿Cuánto tiempo? (How much time? / How long?) ¿Cuánto falta? (How much longer?)

Embedded/Indirect Questions

In embedded questions, keep the accent but use statement word order.

Pattern

No sé qué hacer. (I don't know what to do.) Dime cuándo llegas. (Tell me when you arrive.) Pregúntale dónde vive. (Ask him where he lives.) No entiendo por qué lo hizo. (I don't understand why he did it.)

No Inversion

❌ No sé qué es esto. (WRONG word order for embedded) Actually, this IS correct for Spanish! No inversion needed.

No sé qué es. (I don't know what it is.) Dime quién eres. (Tell me who you are.)

Exclamations

Same words, used for exclamations (still with accent):

¡Qué bonito! (How beautiful!) ¡Cuánto tiempo! (Long time no see!) ¡Cómo llueve! (How it's raining!) ¡Qué día! (What a day!)

Qué + Adjective/Noun

¡Qué interesante! (How interesting!) ¡Qué casa más grande! (What a big house!) ¡Qué pena! (What a shame!)

Question Tags

Spanish has fewer question tags than English:

¿No? / ¿Verdad? / ¿No es cierto?

Es bonito, ¿no? (It's pretty, isn't it?) Vienes mañana, ¿verdad? (You're coming tomorrow, right?)

Common Errors

❌ Using Cuál Before Nouns

❌ Forgetting Accents

❌ ¿Que quieres? ✅ ¿Qué quieres?

Accents distinguish questions from relatives.

❌ Wrong Qué vs Cuál Choice

❌ ¿Qué es tu nombre? ✅ ¿Cuál es tu nombre?

For specific information (not definition), use cuál.
