Stem-Changing Verbs for Beginners
Stem-changing verbs (also called "boot verbs" or "shoe verbs") are special verbs where the vowel in the stem changes in certain forms. They're called "boot verbs" because the changes form a boot shape in conjugation charts!
What Are Stem-Changing Verbs?
Stem-changing verbs have a vowel change in the stem (the part before -ar, -er, -ir) in MOST forms, but NOT in nosotros and vosotros.
The Boot Pattern: The changes happen in yo, tú, él/ella, and ellos forms (inside the "boot"), but NOT in nosotros and vosotros (outside the "boot").
yo (inside boot) ✓
tú (inside boot) ✓
él/ella (inside boot) ✓
nosotros (OUTSIDE boot) ✗ - NO CHANGE
vosotros (OUTSIDE boot) ✗ - NO CHANGE
ellos (inside boot) ✓
Three Main Types of Stem Changes
Type 1: E → IE (e changes to ie)
QUERER (to want)
| Person | Change | Conjugation | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yo | ✓ | quiero | Yo quiero café. (I want coffee.) |
| Tú | ✓ | quieres | Tú quieres agua. (You want water.) |
| Él/Ella/Ud. | ✓ | quiere | Ella quiere viajar. (She wants to travel.) |
| Nosotros/as | ✗ | queremos | Queremos ayudar. (We want to help.) |
| Vosotros/as | ✗ | queréis | Queréis comer. (You all want to eat.) |
| Ellos/Ellas/Uds. | ✓ | quieren | Ellos quieren salir. (They want to leave.) |
Common E → IE Verbs:
| Verb | Meaning | YO Form | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| QUERER | to want | quiero | Quiero aprender español. |
| PENSAR | to think | pienso | Pienso que sí. (I think so.) |
| PREFERIR | to prefer | prefiero | Prefiero el té. (I prefer tea.) |

| Person | Change | Conjugation | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yo | ✓ | puedo | Yo puedo nadar. (I can swim.) |

Type 3: E → I (e changes to i)
This pattern only occurs in -IR verbs!
PEDIR (to ask for/order)
| Person | Change | Conjugation | Example |

quiere quieren ← Boot shape!
queremos queréis ← Outside the boot

Pro Tips
💡 Tip 1: Learn the Boot Shape Draw the boot! It helps you remember which forms change and which don't.
💡 Tip 2: Nosotros Never Changes If you're using "nosotros," keep the original stem. This is the easiest form!
💡 Tip 3: E→I Only for -IR Verbs If it's not an -IR verb, it can't be E→I. Only E→IE or O→UE.
💡 Tip 4: Practice the Big 5 Master QUERER, PODER, PENSAR, DORMIR, and PEDIR first. They're the most common!
💡 Tip 5: They're Still Regular! The endings (-o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an) are still regular. Only the stem changes!
Cultural Notes
📚 Frequency: Stem-changing verbs include some of the most common verbs in Spanish. You'll use QUERER, PODER, and PENSAR constantly!
🗣️ Universal Pattern: The boot pattern works the same in all Spanish-speaking countries. These verbs don't vary regionally.
🌍 In Daily Life: You can't go a day without using these verbs:
- "¿Quieres café?" (Do you want coffee?)
- "No puedo" (I can't)
- "¿A qué hora vuelves?" (What time do you return?)
Next Steps
After mastering stem-changing verbs:
- ✅ Practice stem-changing verbs in other tenses (preterite, present progressive)
- ✅ Learn reflexive stem-changing verbs (dormirse, sentirse)
- ✅ Study verbs with multiple irregularities (tener, venir have stem changes + irregularities)
- ✅ Master common expressions with these verbs
- ✅ Practice in conversation daily
