Time Expressions: Comprehensive Guide

Complete guide to expressing time, duration, and temporal relationships in Spanish.

Hace (Ago/For)

Hace + time + que + preterite (ago): Hace dos años que me mudé. (I moved two years ago.) Hace una hora que comí. (I ate an hour ago.)

Alternative word order: Me mudé hace dos años. (I moved two years ago.)

Hace + time + que + present (for/since): Hace tres años que vivo aquí. (I've been living here for three years.) Hace una hora que espero. (I've been waiting for an hour.)

Desde (Since)

Starting point in time: Vivo aquí desde 2020. (I've lived here since 2020.) Estudio español desde enero. (I've been studying Spanish since January.) Trabajo aquí desde hace dos años. (I've been working here for two years.)

Desde que + clause: Desde que llegué, todo cambió. (Since I arrived, everything changed.)

Desde hace (For/Since)

Present action started in past: Vivo aquí desde hace tres años. (I've been living here for three years.) Estudio desde hace dos meses. (I've been studying for two months.)

Durante (During/For)

Completed period: Viví allí durante cinco años. (I lived there for five years.) - no longer living there Estudié durante toda la noche. (I studied for the whole night.)

Specific period: Durante el verano... (During the summer...) Durante la reunión... (During the meeting...)

Por (For - duration in future)

Expected duration: Voy a España por dos semanas. (I'm going to Spain for two weeks.) Me quedaré por un mes. (I'll stay for a month.)

Durante vs Por

Durante (completed/specific period): Trabajé durante tres horas. (I worked for three hours.) - finished

Por (intended/future duration): Voy a trabajar por tres horas. (I'm going to work for three hours.) - plan

Llevar + Time

Llevar + time + gerund: Llevo dos años viviendo aquí. (I've been living here for two years.) Llevo una hora esperando. (I've been waiting for an hour.)

Llevar + time + sin + infinitive: Llevo tres días sin comer. (I haven't eaten for three days.) Lleva un año sin trabajar. (He hasn't worked for a year.)

Hace vs Llevar

Both express duration: Hace dos años que vivo aquí. (I've been living here for two years.) Llevo dos años viviendo aquí. (I've been living here for two years.)

Llevar emphasizes continuity more

Ya (Already/Now/Yet)

Already: Ya comí. (I already ate.) Ya llegó. (He already arrived.)

Now (emphatic): Hazlo ya. (Do it now.)

In questions (yet): ¿Ya terminaste? (Have you finished yet?)

Todavía/Aún (Still/Yet)

Still (affirmative): Todavía estoy aquí. (I'm still here.) Aún lo tengo. (I still have it.)

Yet (negative): Todavía no llega. (He hasn't arrived yet.) Aún no termino. (I haven't finished yet.)

Todavía vs Ya

Acabar de + Infinitive

Just did something: Acabo de llegar. (I just arrived.) Acabamos de comer. (We just ate.) Acaba de salir. (He/She just left.)

Al + Infinitive

Upon/When: Al llegar, te llamo. (Upon arriving, I'll call you.) Al entrar, vi a María. (When I entered, I saw María.)

Antes de/Después de + Infinitive

Before: Antes de comer, lávate las manos. (Before eating, wash your hands.)

After: Después de trabajar, voy al gym. (After working, I go to the gym.)

Hasta (Until)

Time limit: Trabajo hasta las 5. (I work until 5.) Espera hasta mañana. (Wait until tomorrow.)

Hasta que + subjunctive (future/uncertain): Espera hasta que llegue. (Wait until he arrives.)

Hasta que + indicative (past/certain): Esperé hasta que llegó. (I waited until he arrived.)

Cuando (When)

Specific time: Cuando era niño... (When I was a child...) Te llamo cuando llegue. (I'll call you when I arrive.)

En (In - time to occur)

Future time: Llego en dos horas. (I'll arrive in two hours.) En un mes me voy. (In a month I'm leaving.)

Dentro de (In/Within)

A (At - specific time)
