Starting a Story

Te voy a contar algo. (I'm going to tell you something.) Déjame contarte... (Let me tell you...) ¿Sabes qué me pasó? (Do you know what happened to me?) No te imaginas lo que pasó. (You can't imagine what happened.) Te tengo que contar una historia. (I have to tell you a story.) Esto no te lo vas a creer. (You're not going to believe this.)

Setting the Scene

Había una vez... (Once upon a time...) El otro día... (The other day...) Cuando era niño/a... (When I was a child...) Hace unos años... (A few years ago...) Estaba en... (I was in...) Era un día normal cuando... (It was a normal day when...)

Sequencing Events

Primero... (First...) Luego... (Then...) Después... (After...) Más tarde... (Later...) Al final... (In the end...) De repente... (Suddenly...) En ese momento... (At that moment...) Justo cuando... (Just when...)

Building Suspense

Using Past Tenses

Preterite (completed actions - the plot): Fui al parque. (I went to the park.) Vi a mi amigo. (I saw my friend.) Hablamos por horas. (We talked for hours.)

Imperfect (background - setting the scene): Era un día soleado. (It was a sunny day.) Había mucha gente. (There were many people.) Yo estaba cansado. (I was tired.)

Combining them: Caminaba por la calle cuando vi a María. (I was walking down the street when I saw María.)

Describing People and Places

Era muy... (He/She was very...) Tenía... (He/She had...) El lugar era... (The place was...) Había... (There was/were...)

Direct Speech

Y le dije: "..." (And I said to him/her: "...") Y él/ella me respondió: "..." (And he/she responded: "...") Entonces me preguntó: "..." (Then he/she asked me: "...")

Expressing Emotions in Story

Estaba muy nervioso/a. (I was very nervous.) Me sentí... (I felt...) No sabía qué hacer. (I didn't know what to do.) Estaba muerto/a de miedo. (I was scared to death.) Me dio mucha risa. (It made me laugh a lot.)

Plot Twists

Pero resulta que... (But it turns out that...) Lo que no sabía era que... (What I didn't know was that...) Para mi sorpresa... (To my surprise...) ¿Y sabes qué? (And you know what?)

Conclusion

Al final... (In the end...) Y así fue como... (And that's how...) La moraleja es que... (The moral is that...) Desde entonces... (Since then...) Y colorín colorado, este cuento se ha acabado. (And they lived happily ever after - traditional ending)

Checking Understanding

Example Story Structure

El otro día me pasó algo increíble. Estaba caminando por el parque cuando de repente vi a mi profesor de la universidad. Hacía años que no lo veía. Me acerqué y le dije "Hola." Para mi sorpresa, no me reconoció. Al final resultó que tenía un hermano gemelo.

(The other day something incredible happened to me. I was walking through the park when suddenly I saw my university professor. I hadn't seen him in years. I approached and said "Hello." To my surprise, he didn't recognize me. In the end it turned out he had a twin brother.)
