Time Expressions: Desde, Hace, Llevar

Expressing duration and time relationships in Spanish requires understanding several key patterns that don't always align with English. These constructions are essential for describing how long something has been happening or how much time has passed.

Core Challenge: English uses perfect tenses ("I have lived here for 5 years"), while Spanish often uses present tense with time expressions.

Desde (Since/From)

Desde indicates the starting point of an action or state.

With Specific Time

Vivo aquí desde 2020. (I've lived here since 2020.)

Trabajo en esta empresa desde enero. (I've been working at this company since January.)

No lo veo desde el lunes. (I haven't seen him since Monday.)

Desde + Point in Time

Hace + Time Period (Ago)

Hace + time period = [time] ago (completed action in the past)

Pattern with Preterite

Hace + time period at the end or beginning of the sentence.

Llegué hace dos horas. (I arrived two hours ago.)

Hace dos horas que llegué. (I arrived two hours ago.) [literally: It makes two hours that I arrived]

Desde Hace (For - Duration Continuing)

Desde hace + time period = for [time] (action still ongoing)

Pattern with Present Tense

When describing an action that started in the past and continues now, use present tense + desde hace.

Vivo aquí desde hace cinco años. (I've been living here for five years.) [still live here]

Estudio español desde hace seis meses. (I've been studying Spanish for six months.) [still studying]

No lo veo desde hace mucho tiempo. (I haven't seen him for a long time.)

English Translation: This often translates to English present perfect ("have been -ing"), but Spanish uses present tense.

Hace... Que (For - Duration Pattern)

Alternative pattern placing time expression at the beginning.

Hace + time period + que + present tense verb

Hace cinco años que vivo aquí. (I've been living here for five years.)

Hace seis meses que estudio español. (I've been studying Spanish for six months.)

Hace dos horas que espero. (I've been waiting for two hours.)

Negative Constructions

With negation, describes how long something hasn't happened:

Hace tres días que no como. (I haven't eaten for three days.)

Hace un mes que no veo a Juan. (I haven't seen Juan for a month.)

Llevar + Time + Gerund

Llevar + time period + gerund = to have been doing [something] for [time]

Subject + llevar (conjugated) + time + gerund

Llevo cinco años viviendo aquí. (I've been living here for five years.)

Llevo seis meses estudiando español. (I've been studying Spanish for six months.)

Llevamos dos horas esperando. (We've been waiting for two hours.)

Without Gerund

Llevar + time (without gerund) emphasizes the time period itself:

Llevo cinco años aquí. (I've been here for five years.)

Llevo mucho tiempo en esta ciudad. (I've been in this city for a long time.)

Comparison: Desde Hace vs Llevar

Both express ongoing duration but with different emphasis:

All three translate to: "I've been living here for 5 years."

Subtle Differences

Desde hace / Hace... que: Neutral, factual Trabajo aquí desde hace tres años. (I've worked here for three years.)

Llevar: Emphasizes the ongoing process, often with effort or experience Llevo tres años trabajando en este proyecto. (I've been working on this project for three years.) [implies ongoing effort]

Desde Que (Since - Clause)

Desde que + clause = since [something happened]

Desde que llegué, no he salido. (Since I arrived, I haven't gone out.)

Vive solo desde que se divorció. (He's lived alone since he got divorced.)

Estoy más feliz desde que cambié de trabajo. (I've been happier since I changed jobs.)

Hasta (Until)

Hasta indicates an endpoint.

Trabajaré hasta las cinco. (I'll work until five.)

Vivió allí hasta 2015. (He lived there until 2015.)

No lo supe hasta ayer. (I didn't know it until yesterday.)

Desde... Hasta

Expressing a time range:

Trabajo desde las nueve hasta las cinco. (I work from nine to five.)

❌ Using Perfect Tense (English Influence)

❌ He vivido aquí desde hace 5 años. ✅ Vivo aquí desde hace 5 años.

Spanish uses present tense for actions continuing to the present.

❌ Confusing Hace (Ago) vs Desde Hace (For)

❌ Llegué desde hace dos horas. (mixing patterns) ✅ Llegué hace dos horas. (I arrived two hours ago.) ✅ Estoy aquí desde hace dos horas. (I've been here for two hours.)

Hace alone = ago (completed action) Desde hace = for (ongoing duration)

❌ Wrong Gerund with Llevar

Use gerund (-ando/-iendo), not infinitive.
