Expressing Opinions & Agreement

Introduction

Being able to express what you think, agree or disagree politely, and state preferences is essential for real conversation. Spanish has a rich set of phrases for this — from casual chat to formal debate.

Giving Your Opinion

Direct

• Creo que… — I think/believe that…
• Pienso que… — I think that…
• Opino que… — In my opinion… (more formal)
• Me parece que… — It seems to me that…

Softer / More tentative

• En mi opinión… — In my opinion…
• Para mí… — For me… / In my view…
• Desde mi punto de vista… — From my point of view…
• Diría que… — I would say that…
• No estoy seguro/a, pero creo que… — I'm not sure, but I think…

Examples

• Creo que el español es más fácil que el francés. — I think Spanish is easier than French.
• Me parece que esta es la mejor opción. — It seems to me this is the best option.
• Para mí, lo más importante es la familia. — For me, the most important thing is family.

Grammar note: Creo que + indicative (stating a belief). No creo que + subjunctive (expressing doubt): No creo que sea verdad.

Agreeing

Strong agreement

• Estoy de acuerdo. — I agree.
• Totalmente. — Totally. / Absolutely.
• Exacto. / Exactamente. — Exactly.
• Tienes razón. — You're right.
• Sin duda. — Without a doubt.
• Por supuesto. — Of course.

Partial agreement

• En parte sí. — Partly, yes.
• Tienes algo de razón. — You have a point.
• Depende. — It depends.
• Puede ser. — Could be. / Maybe.
• Más o menos. — More or less.

Disagreeing

Polite disagreement

• No estoy de acuerdo. — I disagree.
• No lo veo así. — I don't see it that way.
• Respeto tu opinión, pero… — I respect your opinion, but…
• No necesariamente. — Not necessarily.
• Yo lo veo diferente. — I see it differently.

Stronger disagreement

• No es cierto. — That's not true.
• De ninguna manera. — No way. / Not at all.
• Estás equivocado/a. — You're wrong.
• Eso no tiene sentido. — That doesn't make sense.

Tip: In Spanish culture, polite disagreement is normal and expected in conversation. Starting with Respeto tu opinión, pero… or Entiendo lo que dices, pero… keeps things friendly.

Expressing Preferences

• Prefiero… a… — I prefer… to…
• Me gusta más… — I like… more.
• Me encanta… — I love…
• No me importa. — I don't mind. / I don't care.
• Me da igual. — It's all the same to me.
• A mí lo que más me gusta es… — What I like most is…

Examples

• Prefiero el café al té. — I prefer coffee to tea.
• Me gusta más viajar en tren. — I prefer traveling by train.
• Me da igual dónde comemos. — I don't mind where we eat.

Asking for Opinions

• ¿Qué piensas? — What do you think?
• ¿Qué opinas? — What's your opinion?
• ¿Qué te parece? — What do you think? (How does it seem to you?)
• ¿Estás de acuerdo? — Do you agree?
• ¿Tú qué dices? — What do you say? (casual)
