Making Plans & Invitations

Introduction

Being able to suggest, accept, and decline plans is where classroom Spanish becomes real-world Spanish. This lesson covers the phrases you need to organize anything from a casual coffee to a weekend trip.

Suggesting & Inviting

Casual suggestions

• ¿Quieres ir al cine? — Do you want to go to the movies?
• ¿Te gustaría tomar un café? — Would you like to grab a coffee?
• ¿Qué tal si vamos a la playa? — How about we go to the beach?
• ¿Por qué no salimos esta noche? — Why don't we go out tonight?
• ¿Te apetece comer algo? — Do you feel like eating something? (common in Spain)

More formal / group plans

• ¿Les gustaría cenar juntos el viernes? — Would you all like to have dinner together on Friday?
• ¿Están libres el sábado? — Are you all free on Saturday?
• Estaba pensando en organizar una reunión. — I was thinking of organizing a get-together.

"Let's…" (nosotros commands / ir a)

• ¡Vamos al parque! — Let's go to the park!
• ¡Hagamos una fiesta! — Let's throw a party!
• Vamos a cenar fuera. — Let's eat out.

Accepting

• ¡Sí, claro! — Yes, of course!
• ¡Me encantaría! — I would love to!
• ¡Buena idea! — Good idea!
• ¡Dale! / ¡Va! — Let's do it! (informal, Latin America / Spain)
• Suena bien. — Sounds good.
• ¡Perfecto! ¿A qué hora? — Perfect! What time?
• Cuenta conmigo. — Count me in.

Declining Politely

• Me encantaría, pero no puedo. — I'd love to, but I can't.
• Lo siento, tengo otros planes. — Sorry, I have other plans.
• Hoy no puedo. ¿Otro día? — I can't today. Another day?
• Gracias por la invitación, pero estoy ocupado/a. — Thanks for the invite, but I'm busy.
• Quizás la próxima vez. — Maybe next time.
• ¡Ojalá pudiera! — I wish I could!

Setting Details

Time

• ¿A qué hora quedamos? — What time shall we meet?
• ¿Nos vemos a las siete? — Shall we meet at seven?
• Quedamos a las ocho. — Let's meet at eight.
• ¿En la mañana o en la tarde? — Morning or afternoon?

Place

• ¿Dónde nos vemos? — Where shall we meet?
• Te veo en el café de siempre. — I'll see you at the usual café.
• ¿En tu casa o en la mía? — At your place or mine?
• Nos encontramos en la entrada. — We'll meet at the entrance.

Confirming

• Entonces quedamos el viernes a las ocho. — So we're set for Friday at eight.
• Te mando un mensaje para confirmar. — I'll text you to confirm.
• ¿Sigue en pie? — Are we still on? (Is it still happening?)
• Ahí estaré. — I'll be there.

Changing Plans

• ¿Podemos cambiar la hora? — Can we change the time?
• Se me complicó. ¿Podemos posponer? — Something came up. Can we postpone?
• ¿Te importa si llegamos un poco tarde? — Do you mind if we arrive a bit late?
• Al final no voy a poder ir. — In the end I won't be able to go.
