Introduction

Ordering food in a foreign language can feel intimidating, but restaurant conversations follow a predictable script. Learn this script and you'll feel comfortable in any Spanish-speaking restaurant.

Arriving & Getting a Table

• Buenas tardes. ¿Tiene mesa para dos? — Good afternoon. Do you have a table for two?
• Tenemos una reservación a nombre de García. — We have a reservation under García.
• ¿Podemos sentarnos afuera? — Can we sit outside?
• ¿Cuánto hay que esperar? — How long is the wait?

Reading the Menu (El Menú / La Carta)

Asking about the menu

• ¿Qué me recomienda? — What do you recommend?
• ¿Cuál es la especialidad de la casa? — What's the house specialty?
• ¿Qué lleva este plato? — What's in this dish?
• ¿Tiene opciones vegetarianas? — Do you have vegetarian options?
• Soy alérgico/alérgica a… — I'm allergic to…

Ordering

• Quisiera… — I would like… (most polite)
• Me gustaría… — I would like…
• Para mí… — For me…
• Voy a pedir… — I'm going to order…
• De entrada, quiero la sopa. De segundo, el pollo. — For starter, I'll have the soup. For main, the chicken.

How you want it cooked

• poco hecho / poco cocido — rare
• al punto / término medio — medium
• bien hecho / bien cocido — well done
• a la plancha — grilled (on a flat grill)
• al horno — baked
• frito — fried

During the Meal

• ¿Me puede traer más agua, por favor? — Can you bring me more water, please?
• ¿Podría traer más pan? — Could you bring more bread?
• Disculpe… / Perdone… — Excuse me… (to get attention)
• Está riquísimo. — It's delicious.
• Falta un plato. — We're missing a dish.

Paying

• La cuenta, por favor. — The check, please.
• ¿Aceptan tarjeta? — Do you accept cards?
• ¿Está incluida la propina? — Is the tip included?
• Quédese con el cambio. — Keep the change.
• ¿Podemos pagar por separado? — Can we pay separately?

Tipping culture varies: In Spain, tipping is optional (rounding up or leaving small change is common). In Mexico and many Latin American countries, 10–15% is standard.
