Simple Conditional Tense for Beginners
Learn the Spanish conditional tense to make polite requests, talk about hypothetical situations, and express "would." It's easier than you think!
What Is the Conditional Tense?
The conditional tense expresses:
- What you would do: "I would go"
- Polite requests: "Could you help me?"
- Hypothetical situations: "I would be happy"
- Future in the past: "He said he would come"
English equivalent: "would + verb"

Common Mistakes to Avoid
❌ Mistake 1: Removing the infinitive ending
- Wrong: "Yo comeía"
- Right: "Yo comería" (keep -er, add -ía)
❌ Mistake 2: Forgetting accent marks
- Wrong: "Yo hablaria"
- Right: "Yo hablaría" (all conditional forms have accents!)
❌ Mistake 3: Using conditional for simple future
- Wrong: "Mañana comería" (for "I will eat tomorrow")
- Right: "Mañana comeré" (use future tense)
- Conditional: "Yo comería pizza" (I would eat pizza - hypothetical)
❌ Mistake 4: Irregular stem errors
- Wrong: "Yo podería"
- Right: "Yo podría" (PODER has irregular stem podr-)
❌ Mistake 5: Confusing conditional with imperfect
- Imperfect: describes past habits
- Conditional: describes hypothetical "would"
- "Comía pizza" (I used to eat pizza - past habit)
