Future Expressions Compared
Spanish has multiple ways to express future events. Each carries different nuances of certainty, immediacy, and formality.
Present Tense for Future
Use: Scheduled events, near future
Mañana voy a Madrid. (Tomorrow I'm going to Madrid.) La clase empieza a las tres. (Class starts at three.)
Common with: mañana, la próxima semana, en dos horas
Ir a + Infinitive
Use: Immediate future, intentions, informal
Voy a estudiar. (I'm going to study.) ¿Qué vas a hacer? (What are you going to do?) Van a llegar tarde. (They're going to arrive late.)
Most common in spoken Spanish
Simple Future (Verb Endings)
Use: Distant future, formal, predictions
Estudiaré mañana. (I will study tomorrow.) Lloverá. (It will rain.) Lo haremos. (We will do it.)
Also for: Speculation, probability ¿Dónde estará? (Where could he be? / I wonder where he is.)
Comparison
Near/certain: Present or ir a Voy al cine (I'm going) / Voy a ir al cine (I'm going to go)
Distant/formal: Simple future Iré al cine mañana. (I will go to the movies tomorrow.)
