What Is It?
The present subjunctive is used to express:
- Wishes, emotions, doubt (WEIRDO triggers)
- Actions in the present or future
- Subjective, uncertain, or hypothetical situations
Formula: Subjunctive trigger + QUE + present subjunctive verb
Forming the Present Subjunctive
The 5-Step Method
Regular verbs follow this pattern:
- Start with YO form of present indicative
- Drop the -O
- Add "opposite" endings:
- -AR verbs → use -E endings
- -ER/-IR verbs → use -A endings

Spelling Changes
These verbs have spelling changes to maintain sound:
-CAR verbs (c→qu):
- buscar → busque, busques, busque...
- tocar → toque, toques, toque...
- explicar → explique, expliques, explique...
-GAR verbs (g→gu):
- llegar → llegue, llegues, llegue...
- pagar → pague, pagues, pague...
- jugar → juegue, juegues, juegue...
-ZAR verbs (z→c):
- empezar → empiece, empieces, empiece...
- comenzar → comience, comiences, comience...
