Tips for Using Cognates
1. Adjust Your Pronunciation
Even though the words look the same, pronounce them with Spanish sounds:
- hotel → oh-TEL (not ho-TEL)
- animal → ah-nee-MAHL (not AN-i-mal)
- chocolate → cho-co-LAH-teh (not CHAWK-lit)
2. Watch for Accent Marks
Many cognates have accents that change the stress:
- música (MOO-see-ca) not (mu-SEE-ca)
- teléfono (teh-LEH-fo-no) not (te-leh-FO-no)
3. Remember Gender
All nouns have gender in Spanish:
- el animal (masculine)
- la capital (feminine)
- el hospital (masculine)
- la nación (feminine)
4. Use Cognates as Your Foundation
When reading Spanish:
- First, identify all the cognates
- Then figure out the other words from context
- Suddenly you understand 50-70% of the text!
5. Be Aware of False Friends
Some words look like cognates but aren't:
- embarazada = pregnant (NOT embarrassed)
- éxito = success (NOT exit)
- actual = current (NOT actual)
