The GUSTAR Pattern

Understanding GUSTAR

GUSTAR works differently from English "to like"!

In Spanish, the thing you like is the subject:

• Literal translation: "The pizza pleases me" = I like pizza
• Me gusta la pizza (The pizza is pleasing to me)

Think: The thing does the action of "pleasing" you!

Basic GUSTAR Structure

Pattern: ME + GUSTA/GUSTAN + thing

GUSTA: for singular nouns or infinitives GUSTAN: for plural nouns

Me gustan los libros. (I like books - plural)

Pattern: ME + ENCANTA/ENCANTAN

More intense than ME GUSTA!

Goes AFTER the verb!

Clarifying Who Likes Something

A + Person

When you need to clarify or emphasize WHO likes something:

Pattern: A + person + LE/LES GUSTA

A mí me gusta el café. (I like coffee - emphasis on me)
A ti te gusta el té. (You like tea.)
A él le gusta la pizza. (He likes pizza.)
A ella le gusta bailar. (She likes dancing.)
A nosotros nos gusta viajar. (We like to travel.)
A ellos les gusta el fútbol. (They like soccer.)

Why Use A + Person?

Three reasons:

1. Emphasis: A mí me gusta (emphasizing YOU specifically)
2. Clarity: A él le gusta (clarifying HE, not she)
3. Contrast: A mí me gusta el café, pero a ti te gusta el té (I like coffee, but you like tea)
