Basic Excuses

Giving Reasons with "Porque"

...porque... (because...) No puedo ir porque estoy enfermo. (I can't go because I'm sick.) Llegué tarde porque había tráfico. (I arrived late because there was traffic.)

Common Excuses

Being busy: Tengo mucho trabajo. (I have a lot of work.) Estoy muy ocupado/a. (I'm very busy.) Tengo demasiadas cosas que hacer. (I have too many things to do.)

Not feeling well: No me siento bien. (I don't feel well.) Estoy enfermo/a. (I'm sick.) Me duele la cabeza. (My head hurts.) Tengo fiebre. (I have a fever.)

Family Reasons

Es un asunto familiar. (It's a family matter.) Tengo que cuidar a... (I have to take care of...) Mi familia me necesita. (My family needs me.) Hay una emergencia familiar. (There's a family emergency.)

Work/School Reasons

Tengo que trabajar. (I have to work.) Tengo un examen. (I have an exam.) Tengo una reunión. (I have a meeting.) Tengo una entrega. (I have a deadline.) Tengo que estudiar. (I have to study.)

Transportation Issues

Se me descompuso el coche. (My car broke down.) Perdí el autobús. (I missed the bus.) Había mucho tráfico. (There was a lot of traffic.) No encontré estacionamiento. (I didn't find parking.)
