Simple Requests - Informal

¿Puedes...? (Can you...?) ¿Me ayudas con...? (Can you help me with...?) ¿Me haces un favor? (Can you do me a favor?) Por favor, ¿...? (Please, ...?)

¿Puedes cerrar la puerta? (Can you close the door?) ¿Me ayudas con esto? (Can you help me with this?)

Simple Requests - Formal

¿Puede...? (Can you... - formal) ¿Podría...? (Could you... - formal, more polite) ¿Me haría el favor de...? (Would you do me the favor of...?)

¿Podría indicarme el camino? (Could you show me the way?)

Asking for Permission

¿Puedo...? (Can I...?) ¿Me permite...? (Do you permit me to...? - formal) ¿Me dejas...? (Will you let me...? - informal) ¿Se puede...? (Is it allowed...?)

¿Puedo usar tu teléfono? (Can I use your phone?) ¿Me permite pasar? (May I pass? - formal)

Bigger Favors

¿Me harías un gran favor? (Would you do me a big favor?) Necesito pedirte un favor. (I need to ask you a favor.) ¿Podrías hacerme un favor enorme? (Could you do me a huge favor?)

Making the Request Clear

¿Podrías + infinitive? (Could you...?)

¿Podrías prestame tu coche? (Could you lend me your car?) ¿Podrías recogerme a las 5? (Could you pick me up at 5?)

Softening Requests

Si no es mucha molestia... (If it's not too much trouble...) Si no te importa... (If you don't mind...) Cuando puedas... (When you can...) Si tienes tiempo... (If you have time...)

Si no es mucha molestia, ¿podrías ayudarme? (If it's not too much trouble, could you help me?)

Urgent Requests

Necesito que... (I need you to...) Es urgente. (It's urgent.) ¿Podrías hacerlo ahora? (Could you do it now?) Lo necesito lo antes posible. (I need it as soon as possible.)

Accepting Requests

Claro que sí. (Of course.) Con gusto. (With pleasure.) Sí, no hay problema. (Yes, no problem.) Por supuesto. (Of course.) Ahora mismo. (Right away.) Déjame ver qué puedo hacer. (Let me see what I can do.)

Declining Requests

Lo siento, no puedo. (I'm sorry, I can't.) Me gustaría, pero... (I'd like to, but...) Ahora no puedo, pero... (I can't right now, but...) No estoy en condiciones de... (I'm not in a position to...)

Asking Someone to Do Something

¿Me pasas...? (Can you pass me...?) ¿Me traes...? (Can you bring me...?) ¿Me prestas...? (Can you lend me...?)

¿Me pasas la sal? (Can you pass me the salt?) ¿Me prestas tu libro? (Can you lend me your book?)

Indirect Requests

Sería muy útil si... (It would be very useful if...) Me vendría bien que... (It would suit me if...) Estaría bien que... (It would be good if...)

Commanding vs Requesting

Command (direct): Cierra la puerta. (Close the door.)

Request (polite): ¿Puedes cerrar la puerta, por favor? (Can you close the door, please?)

Following Up on Requests

¿Has podido...? (Have you been able to...?) ¿Ya...? (Already...?) ¿Cuándo crees que...? (When do you think...?)

Offering to Help First

¿Necesitas algo? (Do you need anything?) ¿En qué te puedo ayudar? (How can I help you?) Dime si necesitas algo. (Tell me if you need anything.)
