La clase es aburrida. — Estoy aburrido.
The class is boring. — I am bored.
ser aburrido = personality trait (boring); estar aburrido = current emotional state (bored).
Ella es muy lista. — ¿Estás listo?
She is very clever. — Are you ready?
ser listo = intellectual quality; estar listo = prepared/ready for something.
Es una persona muy mala. — Estoy malo hoy.
He is a very bad person. — I'm sick today.
ser malo = moral quality or poor quality; estar malo = temporary illness.
Es una buena persona. — ¡Qué bueno está este plato!
He is a good person. — This dish is so tasty!
ser bueno = moral quality; estar bueno = food is tasty or (colloquially) someone is attractive.
Este barrio es seguro. — Estoy seguro de que vendrá.
This neighbourhood is safe. — I'm sure he'll come.
Su familia es rica. — Este pastel está riquísimo.
His family is wealthy. — This cake is absolutely delicious.
Es un niño muy vivo. — El paciente todavía está vivo.
He is a very sharp child. — The patient is still alive.
Es un espíritu libre. — ¿Estás libre esta tarde?
He is a free spirit. — Are you free this afternoon?
Es una persona muy nerviosa. — Estoy nervioso por el examen.
She is a very nervous person. — I'm nervous about the exam.
ser nervioso = personality trait; estar nervioso = current emotional state.
Es demasiado orgulloso para pedir ayuda. — Estoy orgulloso de ti.
He's too arrogant to ask for help. — I'm proud of you.
ser orgulloso = negative trait (arrogant); estar orgulloso = positive emotion (proud of).
El protagonista está muerto al final.
The protagonist is dead at the end.
"Muerto" is almost always used with estar. "Está muerto" = currently dead. "Es muerto" is unnatural.
¡Qué pesado eres! — Esta caja está muy pesada.
You're so annoying! — This box is very heavy.
ser pesado (colloquial) = a boring or annoying person; estar pesado = physical weight or feeling.
